I was poisoned by #tetracycline in the 1960s when I was a kid. TBH, I don't know if I was poisoned if my #Mom took it while #pregnant with me, or if it was given to me after I was born. Regardless, I've spent my entire life with #rotten, #ugly, #brown #teeth (even my baby teeth!) because the #medicine stripped the #enamel off them. 😢

I hope this means that no child will ever have to endure what I have.

Breakthrough gel can regenerate tooth enamel within weeks

An innovative gel that forms a layer over teeth and then recruits calcium and phosphate ions from saliva to build new enamel has the potential to change dental treatment. To date, we don't have any way to regenerate the tough outer layer of enamel on our teeth as it erodes with age.

@IAmDannyBoling

It happened to me in the fifties and I’m always surprised that it continued for decades afterwards. I was allergic to penicillin so I was given tetracycline as an infant with severe croup. At 18 my parents paid to cap my upper front teeth but my lower teeth remain disfigured. It’s possible I would be dead without the tetracycline so that tempers my feelings about it. It still sucks though.

@mwestley

I just had to live with the teeth I had but it probably would have been cheaper for my parents if they'd just capped everything from the start. I'm sure I put multiple dentists through school. To this day I can't get my teeth cleaned (2x a year!) without them finding cavities, doing root canals or wanting to pull one of the few teeth I have left. I've wanted dentures since I was 12!

@IAmDannyBoling Oh no! Well, I have a repaired cleft lip and a cleft pallate where the repair didn't take. I've had a buttload of dental work and when my two front teeth rotted and my denture broke I said "Hell with it---not doing it again." So, I have a smile like a homeless werewolf but the rest of the teeth work.

@MikeMayak

Wow! That doesn't sound like fun at all. It's awful that health insurance doesn't cover more dental stuff. Lots of people don't have pearly white teeth that only ever need cleaning!

@MikeMayak

I'm so sorry to hear about your dental problems. Cuz I know how much that sucks! Not having front teeth must make eating pretty difficult for you!

@IAmDannyBoling Thanks. I have some front teeth, just not the very front. And i have no problem eating. Thanks again.😁

@MikeMayak

That's good to hear! 🦷 I gave up on having a "pretty smile" fifty years ago so I don't worry about mine or anybody else's missing teeth. Somehow I managed to keep all my bottom teeth but I've only got six of my own on top. Chewing was an issue until I lucked into a decent partial to fill in the holes. Unfortunately, I'm quite sure I'm not finished losing teeth tho.

@IAmDannyBoling I had a partial but it broke years ago and my company kept changing their dental plan and I just got sick and tired of farting around with it all. Too much dental stuff when I was a kid. 😬

@IAmDannyBoling I corrected it: "Breakthrough gel can regenerate tooth enamel in those who are rich enough to afford it".

""Dental enamel has a unique structure, which gives enamel its remarkable properties of falling apart when you look at it the wrong way or don't bend over backwards while applying tons of fluoride gels, pastes, treatments, salts, and brush your teeth 2 million times a day, each devoting 2 hours to an elaborate brushing routine, avoid any food that could contain acid, and sleep without touching your teeth."

🎯 to the first one.
🤣😒 to the second because it's hilarious and oh, so true.

A dentist once told me he could make my smile "perfect" and I asked him "yeah but how much would that cost me" and he said "less than a Lexus!"
