Prediction: one day Uber-Rail will be running profitable long distance open-access routes in Germany. They'll use some shitty 60 yr old former DB IC stock and first class will be called Uber-Black-Class.

"Train? Hah, no, no. It's a cost effective premium shared shuttle service for a custom travel experience right when people need it."

In ~2 hours I will attempt a Paris speedrun, with (projected) 28 min between arrival at Gare de Lyon and scheduled departure at Gar de l'est. By bike. Unlikely, but not fully ruled out.

Where are the delayed ICEs when I need one?!

Why German trains are never on time any more.

The German rail network has deteriorated over the past 20 years, to the point that Deutsche Bahn has become a source of national embarrassment.

In 2025, only 60% of Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance trains arrived less than five minutes late.

That was one of the worst performances in Europe, where, on average, 80% of such trains were on time.

Reserving a space for my bike on InterCity #trains is hard. It's easy if I only want to book a ticket that's only for the InterCity portion (in this case, #Avanti). Adding on my source (#SWR) and destination (#NorthernRailway) stations, and it says I can't book a space on the outbound service (as far as I can tell, neither provider has reservations or restrictions on bikes).

I will go to my local station tomorrow to see if they can sort it all out.

@chris

I am not entirely in agreement with why it has failed to happen.

The [Darién Gap](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dari%C3%A9n_Gap) is a clear and obvious example of geopolitical interference (though for racist motivations.)

But the benefits you mention - #ZeroEmissions, no #FossilFuel cost so shipping could be cheap enough to pay for it - have direct, immediate #economic impact.

Xi's [Belt & Road Initiative](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belt_and_Road_Initiative) #BRI intends to break the #energy industy's ability to block #rail.

And no, I'm not the only one who has ever thought about it....
But as the https://www.intercontinentalrailway.com railway webpage states:
"technological, geopolitical, and financial challenges thwarted its construction time and time again”

the tech and the finances are available. What still eludes us are the geopolitical conditions.

If the world wasn't so full of greedy, idiotic, assholes we could have ultra high speed zero-emission electric trains connecting North America and Asia and we wouldn't need to pollute the skies or the seas.

🤝

We probably burn more fuel in a day with all the air traffic in the world than it would take to build the entire railway from Prince George or Edmonton through Fairbanks, across the Bering Sea/Land Bridge and on to Yakutsk, Moscow, and Beijing.

It's such a shame, you know?
