Ahead of the King’s Speech, Urban #Transport Group urged government to unlock transport’s potential for growth. It called for stronger roles for Mayoral Strategic Authorities in rail reform so they become central partners with Great British Railways, not just consultees, and for improved local transport foundations including taxi and private hire reform, simpler zebra crossings and greater devolved #infrastructure powers.

The group welcomed reforms since 2024, including bus and rail changes, Great #British #Railways plans, devolution and an integrated transport strategy, but said barriers remain in street design, road safety, pavement parking and delivery processes such as Transport and Works Act Orders.

It also said transport should be central to fiscal devolution, with greater control of funding tools, business rates and land value capture, alongside investment in schemes such as Northern Powerhouse Rail. further reform would improve connectivity and growth.

King’s Speech: government can ‘unlock potential’ of transport | Urban Transport Group

Find out why strengthening the Railways Bill, reforming taxi and private hire vehicle legislation, and expanding fiscal devolution for local areas are priorities for the next parliamentary session.

🇸🇪🚆🦌 #Alstom and #Swedish start-up Flox Intelligence have begun large-scale trials of an #AI system designed to reduce wildlife collisions on railways and improve passenger safety in Sweden. The #technology uses AI-powered cameras to detect animals near tracks in real time and trigger tailored sound deterrents to keep them away. Early tests identified species including moose, roe deer, foxes and wild boar, while also providing new data on wildlife movement around railways. The trials are being carried out with Tåg i Bergslagen and operator VR across several Swedish rail lines. Around 5,000 animal collisions are reported on Swedish #railways each year, causing delays, repair costs and risks to drivers and passengers. The project is supported by Sweden’s innovation agency Vinnova and aims to improve punctuality, safety and environmental protection.

🚆 The Department for #Transport and Innovate #UK have launched the ninth round of the First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) rail competition, offering £4.8 million in funding for projects aimed at improving safety, reliability and passenger experience across Britain’s #railways. The scheme supports new technologies that could help tackle delays, anti-social behaviour and environmental impacts, while helping major rail projects stay on time and within budget. Since 2017, FOAK has received £62.5 million in government backing. Previous winners include systems using AI to detect bridge strikes and monitor deliveries at HS2 sites, helping reduce disruption and improve efficiency. Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy said innovation would play a key role in modernising Britain’s railways under Great #British Railways. Applications close on 24 June 2026, with projects due to begin in September.

That's the one. Thanks for the link to the article on the Greater Auckland site, which linked to this fantastic proposal for a rapid passenger rail service between Tamaki Makaurau, Waikato and Tauranga;

In these days of oil wars and spiking fossil fuel prices, this proposal from 2017 looks even more prescient than it did at the time.
