Pythagorean tables

It’s not a big problem, but it disturbs me when I read that the Ukrainian capital is now written Kyiv instead of Kiev. I don’t understand why.

Dear reader, it’s not a big problem, but it’s an indicator of homogenization. In Italian, Kiev has been written since the 18th century. With the advent of Zelensky, the Ukrainian language, until then a Russian dialect, was proclaimed the national language and the spelling was changed. Zelesnky, born Russian, changed his name from Vladimir to Volodimir. In the new transliteration into English, Kiev was transcribed Kyiv. The “i” in English is pronounced with a sound similar to the “e” in Italian, so orally it remains “kiev”. But the Italian journalists don’t know this, so now our valiant correspondents try in every way to pronounce an improbable “ki-iv”. One cannot expect journalists to know everything, they’re already exhausted from having to learn the Pythagorean tables, which are difficult, you know? To that purpose, an episode of 1991 comes to mind, after the first landing of Albanians in Brindisi. Tg5 (then in experimental phase, it was called Canale 5 News) wanted to send me to Albania. I went to the embassy to get the visa. The press officer was a big man with the face of someone who had known a thousand disappointments. He wore a gray, dirty and worn suit and a loose tie. He asked me, “Do you know where Albania is?” “Of course. Why?” I replied. “Because one of his colleagues, having obtained the visa, asked me, ‘Excuse me, but where is Albania?’”. It was the correspondent for one of the largest Italian publications. Perhaps he had been too busy studying the Pythagorean tables and hadn’t had time for geography.

#Math refutes this claim, probably most completely by Euler, in Tentamen Novae Theoria Musicae, but even the number 2 was too much for #Pythagorean faulty logic. The number 2 plays a central role in music & wave interactions. This is lost in the 'harmonic series' that treats integers similarly.

The deep mathematics of why 10² + 11² + 12² = 13² + 14²

It's not just an odd quirk of numbers that makes it true, but a deep mathematical insight that dates all the way back to Pythagoras.
