Could Pegasus be like not flying just having wings for being beautiful? :)

(Also, what a monumental trajectory: 150 million years of flying practice, and now scratching in the garden and ending up in the soup...)

Now we move on to the Pterosaurs.
#Pteranadon #Dimorphodon #Thapunngaka and #Mythunga
#Pterodactylus #Nyctosaurus and #Quezalcoatlus
These were designed so they could clip onto bars and trees and things, allowing them to land and fly.

This weeks #Lego #FossilFriday is #Pterodactylus

After 1767, before 1780, an odd fossil was unearthed from the Solnhofen limestone of Bavaria.

Around 1780, Count Friedrich Ferdinand zu Pappenheim gave the specimen to the Naturalienkabinett, or nature cabinet of curiosities (a precursor to the modern concept of the natural history museum)

In 1784, Italian scientist Cosimo Alessandro Collini, described the the first specimen, naming it Pterodactylus antiquus.

A festive flying reptile family reunion 150 million years in the making
University of Leicester study finds nearly 50 hidden relatives of #Pterodactylus, the first #pterosaur

(where I think "relatives" means other members of this species, not other, related species - somebody tried too hard to make this sound seasonal)

A festive flying reptile family reunion 150 million years in the making

- University of Leicester study finds nearly 50 hidden relatives of Pterodactylus, the first pterosaur. - Joined by its newly discovered relatives, Pterodactylus’s ‘family’ now encompasses tiny flaplings, a host of teenagers, some mums and dads and even a few large old seniors. - Fluorescing bones stimulated by powerful LED UV torches, revealed invisible details of the head, hands and feet of Pterodactylus.

🚨 NEW PTEROSAUR! 🚨

Propterodactylus frankerlae was a #pterosaur from the late Jurassic of Germany, found in the famous Solnhofen limestone all the way back in 2011!

The holotype is a STUNNING specimen that has a bunch of features that match #pterosaurs like #Darwinopterus, but it ALSO has a bunch of features that match pterosaurs like #Pterodactylus!

#Leptostomia begaaensis was a small(ish), probe-feeding pterodactyloid #pterosaur from the #Cretaceous of #Morocco!

Its generic name translates to “slender mouth”, and its specific name is a reference to the village of Hassi El Begaa near the Kem Kem Group in Morocco!

Aerodactylus scolopaciceps (named after the #Pokémon #Aerodactyl) is usually known as #Pterodactylus, as they are almost indistinguishable. But there are some subtleties in the ratios of #bone measurements that separate the two into different genera (Vidovic and Martill 2014).

Fun Fact: The specific name, scolopaciceps, refers to the snout looking superficially like the Eurasian #Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola).
