In December 1828, the earliest known fossils of Dimorphodon were found my Mary Anning, at Lyme Regis.
On 5 February 1829, the specimen was acquired by William Buckland.
In 1835, William Clift and William John Broderip named those fossils coining the new species Pterodactylus macronyx
In 1858, Richard Owen found two new specimens. This included the skull. He named it Dimorphodon.
In 1874, Owen made NHMUK PV R1034 the holotype.
