My most controversial opinion is that "pterodactyl" is a perfectly reasonable general term for pterosaurs.
"But I can't tell if you're referring to pterodactylus, pterodactyloids, or pterosaurs in general?!"
It means the third one. I guarantee that most people who use the word "pterodactyl" do not know about pterosaur cladistics, so it just means flappy prehistoric thing, and is therefore most reasonably interpretted as a catch-all term.

various toothy #pterosaurs I always find them particularly difficult to restore without making them look monstrous, the tooth/beak/lip coverage is hard to wrap my head around.
context: I wanted to included this pic from an old spiderman comic, but sadly mastodon doesn't allow both an image and a poll in the same toot! How rude.
