The new guidelines also show that taking #psyllium #fiber supplements, certain #probiotic strains and magnesium oxide supplements can help to improve constipation.

Kiwis could help manage chronic constipation

Chronic constipation could be helped by kiwis, rye bread and high mineral-content water

I don’t bake gluten free but I use #Psyllium Husk for pure spelt breads which easily bake dry. I soak the husk with hot water so it becomes a gel which I let cool down and store in the fridge. Mixing this later in evenly while kneading is NO problem at all. This allows me to control the dough temperature nicely even in summer heat. Spelt prefers colder dough temperatures. I won’t recommend mixing flour and psyllium because the water absorption is very different and needs time.

TIL don't add 1 tablespoon of psyllium husk to 8oz of yogurt - it turns it into concrete. Maybe that's what the secret ingredient in "Roman concrete" was? 😂

Woke up this morning to some good personal news. My #cologuard test results arrived. Negative. Won’t be bothering with that kind of cancer for a bit. If ever. #psyllium #fiber is the cheapest and best healthcare additive I’ve ever done for myself. It may have even saved my life a little bit. I love when tests come back Negative. #today #health #GoodNews
I use psyllium husk fiber as a supplement, and find it to be super helpful for staying "regular". I was curious how it worked so I looked it up and came across this paper, https://journals.lww.com/nutritiontodayonline/Fulltext/2021/07000/Psyllium__The_Gel_Forming_Nonfermented_Isolated.5.aspx . The idea is that the gel forming behavior of psyllium husk fiber is the most important factor allowing all the benefits. Take the paper with a grain of salt though because the authors are affiliated with Proctor and Gamble which makes Metamucil.

Psyllium: The Gel-Forming Nonfermented Isolated Fiber That... : Nutrition Today

trients, which significantly improves fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels in individuals with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (eg, −37 mg/dL). This delay in nutrient absorption prolongs satiety/delays hunger, leading to decreased energy intake and weight loss in overweight and obese patients. In the distal small intestine (terminal ileum), psyllium becomes more concentrated as water is absorbed, and the highly viscous gel interferes with the active reuptake of bile acids, which are captured in the gel and eliminated via stool. This decrease in the bile acid pool stimulates the liver to produce more bile. As cholesterol is a component of bile, the liver expresses low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol receptors to harvest LDL-cholesterol from the blood, thereby lowering both LDL-cholesterol (up to 24%) and total cholesterol (up to 20%) levels without affecting high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level. The cholesterol-lowering benefit of psyllium is also additive to the effects of statin drugs, with an effect equivalent to doubling the statin dose. In the large intestine, the nonfermented psyllium gel has a paradoxical “stool normalizing” effect: psyllium softens hard stool in constipation, firms loose/liquid stool in diarrhea, and normalizes stool form/reduces symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome. Psyllium is the only fiber recommended for treatment of constipation and irritable bowel syndrome by the American College of Gastroenterology. Taken together, psyllium is the only fiber supplement that provides 5 of the major health benefits identified by the Food and Drug Administration (cholesterol lowering, improved glycemic control, decreased energy intake/weight loss, decreased blood pressure secondary to weight loss, and laxation/regularity). Psyllium has also been shown clinically to be effective in disease states (eg, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, obesity, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, hemorrhoids, ulcerative colitis, enteral nutrition–induced diarrhea, fecal incontinence, and irritable bowel syndrome). Taken together, the clinical data support the conclusion that “Fiber needs to gel to keep your patients well.”...

Spent the last hour trying to figure out who sells premium grade #psyllium husk Powder since #terrasoul has been out of stock since last fall. It’s basically only grown for export in India and needs to be tested for lead. This company in #Germany says there is only one producer in India who can make premium grade psyllium. I have to tell you as someone who does an absolute ton of #GlutenFreeBaking, premium psyllium makes a massive difference in the final product.
I usually have 1 #banana, 1/2 scoop #whey #protein + 1/2 scoop #vegan protein + 4 Brazil #nuts and a couple of other nuts for breakfast. Somehow this makes me nauseated and just doesn't seem to sit well with my stomach. Oh, and a few #supplements - #creatine, #vitamins C&D, vitamin B complex, #magnesium, fish oil. I also used to take #psyllium husk but it just makes the breakfast feel even heavier. Gotta see which of all these elements may be upsetting my stomach...

The great psyllium shortage of 2023.
