"The idea of a U.S. “kill line” is going viral in China, fall below it, and the system lets you die. Is that actually how America works? Catherine Liu examines how a wealthy country produces mass poverty, turns everyday life into profit for capital, and fragments society through identity politics while class struggle is pushed aside."

When discussing the cost of housing and the #housingcrisis keep in mind that the vast majority of the reason housing costs several hundred percent (inflation adjusted) more than it did 50 years ago is that they they are enormous now. We build too big and then complain that a single income can't afford it.

When comparing price per square foot, the difference is more like 25% increase. A good increase, but that is driven by things like two+ car garages ($20k+, and older homes didn't have them), better insulation, and more features.

We need to come to terms collectively that our homes are massively inflated and we are not happier, not financially more secure, and not healthier for it.

How are England's deprived areas coping with rising cost of living? - BBC Newsnight

Pressure is mounting on UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt over the upcoming cut in support for energy bills. It comes as energy firms are due to write to customers to warn them of bill increases from the start of April within days. While inflation may have peaked, the rate of food price rises is still running at nearly 17%, and typical household energy bills are set to rise to £3,000 per year next month. Since December, Newsnight has been following people who are struggling to get by in Knowsley, the second most deprived borough in England. The programme returned again last week to see how people there are coping amidst the big squeeze. Victoria Derbyshire reports.
