3D models of 2.8 billion buildings – Spatialists – geospatial news

A research team from the Technical University of Munich (#TUM) led by Prof. Xiao Xiang Zhu has released the #GlobalBuildingAtlas, a 3D dataset comprising 2.75 billion #buildingmodels worldwide at 3‑meter resolution. Built from #PlanetScope satellite imagery and #ML-based extraction, it represents the most detailed and comprehensive global building dataset produced so far.

#planetscope now has a hyperspectral satellite #tanager1 with 420 bands and 30m pixel size. Something I would not have thought possible when I started in #earthobservation . It's expected to be useful in detecting #methane plumes.
If any of you read the #Narnia books as children, do you remember a scene in "Prince Caspian" when Aslan is returning to Narnia and they come to the Bridge (formerly Ford) of Beruna where a river god calls out "Hail, Lord, Loose my chains". Something like that really happened for the Klamath River in Oregon! Issue 140: Algae Blooms + Klamath Dam Removal + Glacial Rivers

Remarkably, a presidential debate isn’t even close to being the messiest event of the summer. That distinction is held by algae, another organism that thrives in hot water. This…

A breakthrough in measuring tropical forest degradation - CTrees

CTrees is a platform to track carbon in every tree and forest on the planet.

Interesting work! Mapping #trees outside #forests is essential, since a large part of #carbon projects are in grasslands and #agroforestry. #Canopy cover, height, and #ABG maps for the entire #European continent from 3-m resolution #PlanetScope 🛰️🌳

The overlooked contribution of trees outside forests to tree cover and woody biomass across Europe

Trees are an integral part of almost all European landscapes, but only forest resources are systematically assessed by national inventories, and the extent to which trees in urban and agricultural areas contribute to biomass and carbon stocks at the national level remains largely unknown. Here...
