Carbon Mapper released the first methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) detections by the Tanager-1 satellite...Tanager-1 captured a methane plume detected at a landfill in Karachi, Pakistan with an estimated emission rate of 1,200 kg CH4 /h. It also revealed a plume of CO2 detected from a coal-fired power plant in Kendal, South Africa with an estimated emission rate of 600,000 kg CO2 /h. - From "Planetology" newsletter #tanager1 #earthobservation #Greenhouse_gas_emissions

First Greenhouse Gas Plumes Detected With NASA-Designed Instrument

The imaging spectrometer aboard the Carbon Mapper Coalition’s Tanager-1 satellite identified methane and carbon dioxide plumes in the United States and internationally.

#planetscope now has a hyperspectral satellite #tanager1 with 420 bands and 30m pixel size. Something I would not have thought possible when I started in #earthobservation . It's expected to be useful in detecting #methane plumes.

"Once in operation, the spacecraft will scan about 50,000 square miles (130,000 square kilometers) of Earth’s surface per day. #CarbonMapper scientists will analyze data from Tanager-1 to identify gas plumes with the unique spectral signatures of #methane and #CarbonDioxide — and pinpoint their sources. Plume data will be publicly available online at the Carbon Mapper data portal."
