Whelp. I don't know Python from Bash, yet here I am on the bleeding edge with my brand-new PineTab-V, the world's first tablet running on a RISC-V chip. Surely I am not the only person on Mastodon with one, but I am having trouble finding any sort of community online for this tablet. It runs a flavor of Debian made by StarFive just for this chip. It comes with LibreOffice, Firefox, and VLC preinstalled, but that's about it. If you have one, I'd love to hear from you. #PineTabV#RISCV
Weekly GNU-like Mobile Linux Update (12/2026): Immutable Ambitions

This past week: postmarketOS introduces Duranium immutable variant, PureOS Crimson beta and Sailfish OS 5.0.0.77 early access released, a Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Amazfish 2.9.0 and more! Enjoy!

LINux on MOBile

I recently received my #pine64 #pinetabv. Going to make a couple of videos on it. I want to publish a tutorial for batch 1 owners on flashing the new test firmware as it requires a new uboot image to be flashed onto the SPI chip.

One major thing I've noticed is that the SOC is highly dependent on the GPU. It cannot handle rendering using software as the CPU is very weak. It is very usable when the desktop is accelerated, web browsing is snappy.

I didn't manage to get the cameras to work, I noticed that there are some cobbled together scripts to get them to work, but that was unsuccessful. I did get display out to work fine though, as seen in the image.

April Update: Risc It For A Biscuit

This month, the PineTab-V returns, PineNote, PineTab2 and PineTime software improvements and a new Pinecil micro soldering tip set. Does anyone even read these descriptions?

(Instead of a "negative" name, now it has a name that's hard to spell correctly, judging from how many people spell Python incorrectly lol)

Pine64’s RISC-V tablet now ships with a Debian-based Linux distro and improved hardware

The PineTab-V is a 10.1 inch tablet with a 1280 x 800 pixel IPS LCD display, 8GB of LPDDR4 memory, 128GB of eMMC storage, and a detachable keyboard with backlit keys.

What really makes it different from most tablets though is that it’s powered by a RISC-V processor rather than an ARM or x86 chip. Pine64 began selling the tablet to developers and early adopters in 2023, and now the company […]

This time next week I'll be travelling to @fosdem but which laptop should I take?
My primary work one running Fedora Silverblue is the best, but the battery doesn't last more than about 15 minutes now
I have another two slower ones (i5-2520) but have better batteries
And there's the much lighter Lenovo Yoga C630 (Snapdragon aarch64 with touchscreen) running Windows ... But it can be charged from a portable power bank
I'd like to have just the #RISCV tablet #PinetabV, but probably not practical.
Question for any Pinetab2 users. Has Anybody found any glass screen protectors that fit the tablets screen?

Many months later and I've finally found the special USB-UART for my @PINE64 #pinetabv ... Not where I expected it to be and it was in a very blank white box that it came in so wasn't obvious what was inside it ...

Doing some evening hacking, bringing up the @PINE64 #PineTabV with upstream Linux (6.8-rc3) with only a new DTS and no additional patch!

So far it boots with working console output and eMMC/µSD, but that's about it...
