The beautiful #RMSLusitania was launched in 1906 on #ThisDayInHistory, from John Brown Shipyard on the #RIverClyde, Scotland. #Lusitania was one of the fastest #OceanLiners of her day, only slightly slower than her sister #RMSMauretania. She was tragically lost during #WorldWarI.

🇬🇧 Didn't quite manage to share this on here yesterday, but I wrote a #BlogPost for the 115th anniversary of the launch of #RMSTitanic - and the accident of James Dobbin, a shipyard worker at #HarlandAndWolff who was involved in it.

James Dobbin, the man injured during Titanic's launch

Today, May 31st, 2026, marks the 115th anniversary of RMS Titanic's launch. It was a fine, clear day in Belfast, and at 12:13 pm, Titanic began to move backwards on her slipway, descending into the...

I've been fascinated by #OceanLiners since I was a wee child, but the #Titanic story was unusually compelling given the search for its wreck in the 1980s. It was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1911 that #WhiteStarLine's ill-fated #RMSTitanic was launched at #HarlandAndWolff in #Belfast.
#SSNormandie, one of the finest, most sumptuous #OceanLiners ever, left on her maiden voyage to New York on #ThisDayInHistory in 1935. Her combination of a #BulbousBow and #TurboElectric propulsion was revolutionary, and earned #France its only #BlueRiband for the fastest liner.
One of my favourite #OceanLiners, #RMSAquitania, was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1913. With a service life running from 1914 to 1950, #Cunard's stately and handsome #Aquitania worked as a troopship during both World Wars & was the last four-stack liner working the Atlantic.
#RMSTitanic left the port of #Southampton in 1912 on #ThisDayInHistory for her maiden voyage to NYC. She never made it, striking an iceberg and sinking due to her captain's negligence in not reducing speed. #Titanic is one of very few #OceanLiners known to the general public.

#RMSCeltic, first in a quartet of big new #OceanLiners for #WhiteStar, was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1901. She and her sisters in #TheBigFour inaugurated White Star Line's new emphasis on unparalleled luxury & comfort instead of competitive speed (with her modest 16 kn).
My love of #OceanLiners extends to the odd ones, like #Soviet liner #MikhailLermontov, which was launched in 1970 for the Atlantic run but converted into a #CruiseShip. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1986, in harbour & under command of a #NewZealand pilot, she was run aground and sunk.
