🇬🇧 Didn't quite manage to share this on here yesterday, but I wrote a #BlogPost for the 115th anniversary of the launch of #RMSTitanic - and the accident of James Dobbin, a shipyard worker at #HarlandAndWolff who was involved in it.

James Dobbin, the man injured during Titanic's launch

Today, May 31st, 2026, marks the 115th anniversary of RMS Titanic's launch. It was a fine, clear day in Belfast, and at 12:13 pm, Titanic began to move backwards on her slipway, descending into the...

I've been fascinated by #OceanLiners since I was a wee child, but the #Titanic story was unusually compelling given the search for its wreck in the 1980s. It was on #ThisDayInHistory in 1911 that #WhiteStarLine's ill-fated #RMSTitanic was launched at #HarlandAndWolff in #Belfast.

In the wake of the #Titanic disaster, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1912, 284 firemen (the coal stokers) on her sister ship #RMSOlympic went out on #strike because of the deplorable condition of her lifeboats. Most of the firemen on #RMSTitanic went down with her, keeping the power on.
#Cunard #OceanLiner #RMSCarpathia arrived in NYC on #ThisDayInHistory in 1912 carrying ~712 survivors from #RMSTitanic. First on the scene, she collected everyone who lived. Launched in 1902, moderately-sized #Carpathia was later torpedoed and sunk in 1918 by a German submarine.

I haven't done a #DailyDoodle in a while, so here's one for the 14th April.

On 14th April 1912, the Titanic hit the iceberg that would sink it a few hours later.

(Probably one of the scrappiest depictions, but I do them quickly intentionally).

#RMSTitanic struck an iceberg at 2340 ship's time on #ThisDayInHistory in 1912. #Titanic slipped beneath the waves at 0220 the next morning, lasting longer than she should have, and taking over 1500 people with her. The easily-preventable disaster is a monument to human hubris.
#RMSTitanic left the port of #Southampton in 1912 on #ThisDayInHistory for her maiden voyage to NYC. She never made it, striking an iceberg and sinking due to her captain's negligence in not reducing speed. #Titanic is one of very few #OceanLiners known to the general public.
#HMHSBritannic was launched on #ThisDayInHistory in 1914. Meant to serve as #RMSBritannic on the North Atlantic #OceanLiner service, and built as a larger, safer sister ship to #RMSTitanic & #RMSOlympic, she worked instead as a hospital ship until sunk by a mine in the Aegean.
The library in #Chorlton was delayed as the plans (to be personally approved by Andrew Carnegie) were lost onboard the #RMSTitanic
