ALS, the muscle wasting disease of ice bucket challenge fame, is sometimes genetic, sometimes sporadic, but sometimes pops up in clusters. One such cluster in a little skiing village in France unnerved the local GP - and was eventually pinned on false morel mushrooms.

I've been doing some #UrbanForaging recently, but I've had no plans of getting into #MushroomForaging due to the higher stress of getting poisoned, but now a tree down the block appears to have sprouted a Chicken of the Woods right at head height next to the sidewalk. Is that really what this is?

Does anyone have any idea what this thing is? It feels spongey like a mushroom. I picked it among other more common looking mushrooms. It looks like a flower.. but I am convinced its a fungi. It doesn't look like anything I have seen during identification or in pictures or Internet searches.
