"This event was originally scheduled for April 16. The date has been updated to May 20.

Join #MOFGA’s Crop Specialist, Caleb Goossen, for a discussion on #organic management of common pests in the #VegetableGarden. Caleb will start by sharing strategies used to minimize the presence of pests from the outset using cultural practices such as promoting the presence of '#beneficials'. But sometimes pests show up anyway, despite our best efforts or during particularly challenging growing seasons. So, Caleb will also discuss what can be done when pests emerge."

Checking out #GearLibraries just makes sense

Sharing equipment makes #OutdoorRecreation more accessible, equitable and #sustainable.

By Amy Paradysz, Winter 2025-26

"We're all familiar with the principle behind #libraries: The community shares a collection of books so we can all access media without having to buy, own or store it. Gear libraries are built on the same notion: Sharing equipment makes outdoor recreation more accessible, more equitable and more sustainable. And sometimes it just makes good sense: Do you really want to own that pull-behind ski chariot that you might use once or twice?

"Thanks to a new coalition called the #MaineGearLibraryNetwork, it’s becoming easier to access a wider variety of gear throughout the state. For example, although #KindlingCollective in downtown #PortlandME doesn’t have enough space to stock a wide variety of outdoor apparel, their members can borrow what they need through #MaineGearShare in #BrunswickME at no additional charge.

" 'The network is a growing coalition of community organizations that are working together to make outdoor recreation more accessible, especially for rural, low-income and historically excluded communities,' said Maine GearShare Advancement Manager Emily Mackeown. 'This means that more Mainers can enjoy the outdoors in all seasons.'

"The lending or renting model varies greatly across the network. At some gear libraries, members can check out items for free—and membership may be as simple as having a card to your local library.

"More commonly, there’s a fee to check out items, but gear libraries that are nonprofits or under the auspices of a public library or university can charge less than a for-profit rental business would.

"Sometimes there’s a sliding scale based on socioeconomic factors; basically, people with more resources subsidize gear for those with fewer resources. At some gear libraries, groups like school outing clubs can save a great deal of money by purchasing a membership that covers hundreds of 'participant days' worth of gear, eliminating choices of what gear, exactly, they can afford to borrow."

5:00pm - 6:30pm
Morrell Meeting Room, Curtis Memorial Library

For Adults and Seniors

"Join #MOFGA and #CurtisMemorialLibrary for a special talk on mushrooms. In an age of increasing stress and increasing health care costs, people seek healthy self-care practices in order to achieve and maintain optimum health. complement mainstream medicine for improved health maintenance or during those times when our health is compromised by illness, stress or disease. We benefit from generations of traditional healers around the world who have walked before us and utilized mushrooms and plants for their healing potential. Now western science is confirming the value of mushrooms as healing agents. Integrating medicinal mushrooms into our normal diet or as dietary supplements can help us all maintain good health. Join mycologist and author Greg Marley for a medicinal mushroom talk focused on the common Northeastern wild and cultivated mushrooms providing health benefits in our lives and available in the woods or foraged in a good market.

#GregMarley has been studying, growing, collecting and cooking #WildMushrooms for more than 45 years. He teaches #MushroomIdentification and ecology to hundreds of new #foragers as well as consulting in cases of mushroom poisoning. Greg is the author of Mushrooms for Health; Medicinal Secrets of Northeastern Fungi (2009) and Chanterelle Dreams, Amanita Nightmares, The Love Lore and Mystique of Mushrooms (2010). Marley lives and mushrooms along the coast of Maine. When not #mushrooming he works as a mental health trainer and consultant in suicide prevention and response after a loss."

#EPA watchdog finds #BrunswickLanding is among #contaminated sites vulnerable to #SeaLevelRise, #flooding

Russ Reed, March 31, 2026

#BrunswickME - "The internal watchdog at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found that about 100 of the nation's most #contaminated toxic waste sites, including one in #Maine, are in areas prone to #NaturalDisasters, posing a potential public health threat.

"The EPA's Office of Inspector General issued two new reports last week that are part of a series assessing the weather-related vulnerabilities of the 157 federal #Superfund sites prioritized for cleanup due to the serious risk they pose to public health and the environment. About 3 million Americans live within a mile of a Superfund site, while 13 million people live within 3 miles.

"Brunswick Landing, the site of the former #BrunswickNavalAirStation, is among the Superfund sites that were found to be at risk from multiple natural-disaster threats. According to the Inspector General, Brunswick Landing is one of 49 sites in coastal areas that are at risk from #SeaLevelRise or #StormSurge from hurricanes. Many of those sites are located near highly populated areas and important ecological locales like #ChesapeakeBay .

"Brunswick Landing is also one of 47 low-lying sites that are specifically prone to inland flooding from heavy rain. The Inspector General's review also found 31 sites in areas at high risk for wildfires."

Report warns Maine’s largest PFAS spill could affect water and ecosystems for years

by Everett Sloane, 3/29/2026

"A scientific analysis of the largest PFAS contamination event in Maine’s history warns that the effects of a massive firefighting foam spill at #BrunswickExecutiveAirport could persist in local #waterways and #ecosystems for years. The release, which sent approximately 1,450 gallons of aqueous film-forming foam concentrate into streams feeding the #AndroscogginRiver, has already triggered fish consumption advisories and a federal enforcement order. Yet the full scope of long-term #ecological damage remains difficult to measure, in part because the spill site sits on land already contaminated by decades of military use."

#BrunswickME - Late Season #SeedSowing at Woodward Point

Friday, March 27, 2026
2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

#WoodwardPointPreserve
219 Woodward Point Road
Brunswick, ME

"March is late in the season?! For native plants it is! Most native plant seeds require a long time in the cold and snow of winter in order to germinate. But, there are a few species that don’t require this, and fortunately they’re all easy ones for beginning growers. Come join us for the last seed sowing workshop of the year!

We will guide a hands-on exploration of the many steps of growing #NativePlants from seed, and establishing diverse landscapes using seed-grown plants. We will also learn about the diverse plants that grow here in Maine and their unique #SeedCollection and seed sowing processes.

Participants will practice winter seed sowing themselves, leaving one pot for the new #CommunitySeedGarden at Woodward Point Preserve, and take one pot to build #habitat at home.

Notes on access: This workshop will be held in an unheated barn. If the weather is sunny, we will start the workshop outdoors. To come prepared, dress warmly but in layers. The parking lot includes space for 18 vehicles and 4 additional handicap accessible spots. Please park nose in, snugly as reasonable, to best accommodate the full number of participants. The barn is located directly adjacent to the parking lot. No bathrooms are available on site. Please let us know if there are ways we can help get you to the event!

Tickets

Our sliding scale registration is offered to make this event as accessible as possible while covering the costs of time, seeds, soil and pots. The recommended level is $25 for non-members, and $20 for members. Paying above provides generous support to others to attend, and contributing at lower levels is welcome if cost is a barrier to attendance. Thank you, we look forward to seeing you there!"
