Milano, 3 giu. - (Adnkronos) - E' stato assegnato a Lane (società del Gruppo Webuild ) un contratto da 1 miliardo di dollari per l'Ohio River Tunnel, opera chiave per la tutela ambientale della Pennsylvania che sta per nascere a Pittsburgh. L'opera , uno dei tasselli principali del Regional Tunnel System sarà realizzata da Lane (in quota 50%) in joint venture con il partner locale Brayman. L'infrastruttura - si legge in una nota - funzionerà come un'enorme rete sotterranea che correrà tra i 36 e i 45 metri di profondità per impedire lo sversamento diretto delle acque reflue in eccesso nei fiumi Allegheny, Monongahela e Ohio. Un intervento dal valore trasformativo per le infrastrutture idriche regionali, che combina ingegneria di precisione con una visione moderna della gestione del territorio.
L'Ohio River Tunnel sarà un vero e proprio fiume sotterraneo, un canale artificiale progettato per migliorare la qualità dell'acqua in tutta l'area di Pittsburgh. Le acque reflue in eccesso saranno infatti catturate, convogliate in una galleria profonda, immagazzinate temporaneamente e infine pompate verso un rinnovato impianto di trattamento. Il progetto è parte del Clean Water Plan dell'Alcosan, un programma di lungo periodo che combina gallerie profonde, sistemi di pompaggio e potenziamento degli impianti di trattamento, per proteggere le vie d'acqua della regione. L'opera è il primo dei tre principali tunnel profondi previsti dal Regional Tunnel System di Alacosan.
Questo nuovo contratto prevede la realizzazione di circa 8 chilometri di galleria e diversi pozzi. Il tunnel idraulico principale, oltre 5 metri di diametro, si estenderà per circa 6 chilometri e sarà scavato con una Tunnel Boring Machine di ultima generazione. A questa galleria si collegheranno due tunnel secondari, il Chartiers Creek Tunnel e il Saw Mill Run Tunnel, larghi poco più di 4 metri e lunghi rispettivamente circa 1,3 chilometri e 500 metri. In superficie è inoltre prevista la realizzazione di opere connesse, inclusi alcuni regolatori di flusso, due edifici tecnici e una nuova bocca di scarico nel fiume, tutte opere integrate nel tessuto urbano con un'impronta minima. Negli Stati Uniti, Lane ha già realizzato più di 160 km di tunnel per sistemi idraulici e infrastrutture urbane in oltre 200 progetti.

Milan, June 3 – (Adnkronos) – Lane (a company of the Webuild Group) has been awarded a $1 billion contract for the Ohio River Tunnel, a key project for environmental protection in Pennsylvania that will soon be underway in Pittsburgh. The project, one of the main components of the Regional Tunnel System, will be carried out by Lane (in a 50% stake) in joint venture with local partner Brayman. The infrastructure – as stated in a note – will function as a vast underground network running between 36 and 45 meters deep to prevent the direct discharge of excess wastewater into the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio rivers. A transformative intervention for regional water infrastructure, combining precision engineering with a modern approach to land management.

The Ohio River Tunnel will be a true underground river, an artificial channel designed to improve water quality throughout the Pittsburgh area. Excess wastewater will be captured, conveyed into a tunnel several meters deep, temporarily stored, and finally pumped to a renovated treatment plant. The project is part of the Clean Water Plan of Alcosan, a long-term program combining deep tunnels, pumping systems, and upgrades to treatment plants to protect the region’s waterways. The project is the first of three main deep tunnels planned for Alacosan’s Regional Tunnel System.

This new contract involves the construction of approximately 8 kilometers of tunnel and several wells. The main hydraulic tunnel, over 5 meters in diameter, will extend for about 6 kilometers and will be excavated using a state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machine. This main gallery will connect to two secondary tunnels, the Chartiers Creek Tunnel and the Saw Mill Run Tunnel, each approximately 4 meters wide and 1.3 kilometers and 500 meters long, respectively. Above ground, the construction of associated works is also planned, including several flow regulators, two technical buildings, and a new outfall in the river, all integrated into the urban fabric with a minimal footprint. In the United States, Lane has already carried out more than 160 km of tunnels for hydraulic and urban infrastructure in over 200 projects.

This is a major win for #pittsburgh and the #Monongahela valley. The US Steel coke plant in Clairton, PA has been dumping too much hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas -- exceeding the legal limit 103 days last year. But now the Allegheny County Health Department is finally forcing them to fix their coke ovens.

There's a big fine +plus+ a compliance plan. US Steel is now on the hook to fix the problem within the next few months.
