Hype for the Future 132L: The Monongahela National Forest

Introduction The Monongahela National Forest is a national forest located within the highlands of eastern West Virginia, just west of the section of the Blue Ridge Mountains that divides the area from the Commonwealth of Virginia to the east. Today, the vast majority of the Monongahela National Forest overlaps with the National Radio Quiet Zone (NRQZ) and numerous parcels are within a ten-mile radius of the Green Bank Observatory, resulting in the heaviest restrictions on cell service and […]

Hype for the Future 121O: Borough of Nemacolin, Pennsylvania

Overview Though the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is home to the luxury resort named Nemacolin, the Borough of Nemacolin is actually located further west within the Commonwealth, west even beyond the Monongahela River and into the boundaries of Washington County. Originally founded as a company town in the area centered around the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, the community today is notable for winding streets and roads throughout the entirety of borough limits.

Hype for the Future 117D: Historic Sites of Southwest Pennsylvania

Introduction The historical significance of the southwestern region of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, largely south of the Ohio River along both sides of the Monongahela, is largely determined by the Scots-Irish “frontier” settlement in the European colonization of largely British Colonial America. Additional groups had included the Germans, Dutch, Scots-Irish, Quakers (often associated with the north of England), and related groups often also associated with the Mid-Atlantic colonies […]

Hype for the Future 41A: About the Pittsburgh Area

Pittsburgh is located within the Alleghenies of the Appalachian Mountains, at the confluence of the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River and the source of the Ohio River. While the innermost area is identified as an obvious grid pattern, as with Philadelphia, the terrain of the Pittsburgh region results in organic street patterns further away from the inner city naturally, as is the unfortunate reality of modern suburbia. In comparison, the region around Philadelphia is flatter, so the […]

If you win an EGOT, they should give you an ingot.
#Monongahela

This is a major win for #pittsburgh and the #Monongahela valley. The US Steel coke plant in Clairton, PA has been dumping too much hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas -- exceeding the legal limit 103 days last year. But now the Allegheny County Health Department is finally forcing them to fix their coke ovens.

There's a big fine +plus+ a compliance plan. US Steel is now on the hook to fix the problem within the next few months.

BREAKING: U.S. Steel Fined $2.2 Million for Hydrogen Sulfide Exceedances

The Allegheny County Health Department (ACHD) has issued an enforcement order against U.S. Steel, having determined that emissions from the company’s Clairton Coke facility caused 152 exceedances of the state hydrogen sulfide (H2S) air quality standard between March 2, 2022, and Nov. 30, 2023. The 14-page enforcement order, dated Dec. 29 but uploaded to the ACHD website late this week, indicates those exceedances occurred at ACHD’s Liberty Borough monitoring site. Here’s a breakdown of the fines

Went to D.C. and got good response from Senators to community request that F.S. stop #clearcutting the steepest slopes. Below is a local F.S. clearcut on >50% slope, which is contrary to the #Monongahela #Forest Plan. Can't see how this helps with #flooding #WorthMoreStanding

TIFO (Figured Out) that when my 3rd great grandparents left Somerset #Pennsylvania and moved to southern #Illinois in 1836, a brother and sister of that grandmother accompanied them, along with their families.

Wondering about the route...

Did they make the trek overland, or catch a boat on the #Monongahela or #Ohio River and ride it down?
