Republican States Claim Zero Abortions. A Red-State Doctor Calls That ‘Ludicrous.’

In Arkansas, state health officials announced a stunning statistic for 2023: The total number of abortions in the state, where some 1.5 million women live, was zero.

In South Dakota, too, official records show zero abortions that year.

And in Idaho, home to abortion battles that have recently made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the official number of recorded abortions was just five.

In nearly a dozen states with total or near-total abortion bans, government officials claimed that zero or very few abortions occurred in 2023, the first full year after the Supreme Court eliminated federal abortion rights.

Those statistics, the most recent available and published in government records, have been celebrated by anti-abortion activists. Medical professionals say such accounts are not only untrue but fundamentally dishonest.

“To say there are no abortions going on in South Dakota is ludicrous,” said Amy Kelley, an OB-GYN in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, citing female patients who have come to her hospital after taking abortion pills or to have medical procedures meant to prevent death or end nonviable pregnancies. “I can think of five off the top of my head that I dealt with,” she said, “and I have 15 partners.”

For some data scientists, these statistics also suggest a troubling trend: the potential politicization of vital statistics.

Michigan Supreme Court hears arguments about changing minimum wage

The Michigan Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a dispute over the state’s minimum wage law that dates back to 2018, when the Michigan legislature decided to adopt increases in the minimum wage outlined in a ballot initiative, but did so with the intent to water them down. Since then, proponents for the initiative have challenged the legislature’s ability to do so, taking that fight to the state’s highest court on Thursday.

Advocates behind the 2018 proposal, which among other things would have raised the minimum wage to $12 by 2022, had enough signatures to get the issue on the ballot and allow voters to decide the issue, but instead, the legislature passed the initiatives, with leadership indicating from the start that the plan was to quickly amend the changes.

As things stand, Michigan’s minimum wage sits at $10.10, although it will increase to $10.33 on January 1, 2024. However, under the current law, it would not surpass $12 an hour until 2030, eight years after the ballot initiative would have achieved that.

Proponents of raising the minimum wage assert that the 2018 Republican-led legislature bypassed the rights of the people of Michigan to pursue ballot proposals.

Michigan earns high marks on redistricting in new report, with room for improvement

In a new report evaluating state redistricting efforts, Michigan scored a “B” based on feedback from state and local organizations, advocates and community organizers.

The report by the Coalition Hub for Advancing Redistricting & Grassroots Engagement (CHARGE), used interview survey responses to evaluate each state’s redistricting efforts, including what worked, what did not and what could be done better in the future.

Michigan ranked alongside Alaska, Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Montana, New Mexico and Vermont. Only two states ranked higher at an “A-”: California and Massachusetts. Alabama, Florida, Illinois, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin all received the lowest grade, an “F.”

According to the report, the states were graded based on transparency, opportunities for public input, willingness of decision makers to draw districts based on that input, adhering to nonpartisanship, empowerment of communities of color, and policy choices such as rejecting prison gerrymandering.

Senate Dems introduce prescription drug oversight board bills following governor’s speech

Senate Democrats on Tuesday introduced another tool to combat high drug prices, seeking to fulfill another one of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s fall priorities.

State Sens. Darrin Camilleri (D-Trenton), Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-Bay City) and Veronica Klinefelt (D-Eastpointe) put forth a package of bills — Senate Bills 483, 484 and 485 — to create a Prescription Drug Affordability Board, an independent body that will set upper payment limits on prescription drug costs.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called for the creation of this board in her “What’s Next” address, citing recommendations from the state’s Prescription Drug Task Force established in 2020.

“Let’s further lower the cost of prescription drugs by implementing the task force’s remaining recommendations, like establishing an independent, nonpartisan prescription drug affordability board.” Whitmer said in the speech.

“We need to hold bad actors across the supply chain accountable for skyrocketing prices, while also encouraging [research and development] for new treatments and cures made right here in Michigan,” she said.

Activist files legal challenge to disqualify Trump from 2024 presidential race in Michigan ⋆ Michigan Advance

A Highland Park resident filing a legal challenge Monday aimed at disqualifying Donald Trump from the 2024 primary and general election ballots in Michigan, claiming the former president is ineligible to serve another term because he had engaged in an insurrection or rebellion against the U.S.

Robert Davis, who has frequently filed lawsuits against public officials, is urging Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to declare that under the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment, Trump is prohibited from appearing on the ballot next year.

The 14th Amendment is a Civil War-era addition to the Constitution. Section 3 of the amendment prevents those who “engaged in insurrection or rebellion” against the U.S. from holding office.

Davis argues that Trump’s role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, his repeated attempts to overturn the election, and his continued financial support for people charged in the U.S. Capitol attack amount to engaging in an insurrection or rebellion.
