The First Past The Post voting system undermines our politics. It leaves most of us with MPs we didn't vote for, and keeps delivering results that don't represent public opinion.

The upcoming Elections Bill is a chance to address this. I just signed a petition to the Democracy Minister, calling for the system to be changed to Proportional Representation.

Maine voters decisively rejected a Republican-backed proposal that would have imposed stricter voting restrictions, including limiting early voting, requiring photo ID, banning prepaid absentee envelopes, and reducing drop boxes. The defeat sends a clear message in the broader national debate over voting access, especially as Maine’s voting methods—favored by many in its aging and rural population—are now protected. The proposal’s defeat reflects Maine's support for easier voting, contrasting with efforts in other states to tighten voting laws. Will this boost efforts to expand access nationwide? Maine Voters Reject Plan to Tighten Voting Rules

The wide-ranging measure, backed by conservatives, would have eliminated two days of early absentee voting, required photo identification and limited drop boxes to one per town.

@americanfietser.bsky.social "no taxation without representation."

I mean, everything you're saying, but this is just one of the signs becoming more obvious lately that we are in a crisis of democracy. Lack of legitimate representation in the USA is real, and has been for a long while . I think #uncapTheHouse and other #votingReform like #RCV are going to have to be part of getting us out of it.

I hope we will have polling stations set up in Sixth-form and FE colleges, to encourage voting in that demographic.

Good. But if it's fairness that the UK wants, then a change to a form of PR is necessary.

Conspicuous by its absence is any mention of electoral reform.
The biggest reason for lack of trust in our democracy is the massive numbers of votes which are pointless, in the modern equivalent of rotten boroughs. A new approach to voting is essential. What’s good enough for mayoral elections should be good enough for Westminster elections too.

I should be packed and on my way to #GothsOnAField right now, but my brain wouldn't let me go until I wrote some code.

This is the start of a piece of work to demonstrate visually the value of preferential voting systems such as #AV over #FPTP. There will be a companion piece to demonstrate the value of #PR systems.

The long term goal is an actual grassroots movement for #VotingReform in the UK, separate from political parties.

But for now I've written enough that I can go hang out in a barn and watch #Goth #LiveMusic for a weekend.

Sorry for the swears in the last post. Don’t swear often on social media but I’m really getting tired of “vote Liberal because they have a better chance of defeating the cons and won’t mess up too badly” whilst watching yet again the Liberals mess up. But hey, we essentially have a 2 and a half party system in Canada anyway. I’m also still mad that Justin didn’t bring in voting reform.
I’ll stop now. Maybe go back to posting some knitting pictures.
