Stop placing complex chronic illness patients on psych holds.

If you don’t know how to treat someone, say so. Don’t tell them it’s all in their head.

Placing patients in the psych ward breaks their trust, sets back their baseline and sends a clear message that they’re not safe in your care.

Medical trauma is real. It maims and kills. Respect our expertise in our bodies. Listen to us and let us be partners in our care.

Dismissed and Disbelieved, Some Long COVID Patients Are Pushed Into Psychiatric Wards

The chronic illnesses that make doctors doubt their patients often start after what “should” be a short-lived sickness—like COVID-19.

Exposure therapy is hard to do when you're already stressed out about so many things. But I'm determined to succeed! #MedicalPTSD
I'm eating dinner around 5:30 so I can walk more. I'm trying to keep my mind busy so my PTS doesn't overwhelm me. #MedicalTrauma #MedicalPTSD

So, despite my best efforts to get on top of it, I got pretty badly trauma triggered yesterday.

This is the second time I have noticed nasty body pain the day after.

Anybody else noticed a big physiological fallout after a meltdown? - aside from feeling spent, tired, and emotionally raw (which I expect).

Attending a training today on #medicalPTSD #medicalTrauma with Dr. Sacha McBain, leading expert on this topic at the University of Arkansas, who shared a #quote I hadn't seen before:

#psychology #mentalHealth #PTSD #chronicIllness

When I first started studying #medicalPTSD in ~2018 in inflammatory bowel disease (#IBD #CrohnsDisease #UlcerativeColitis) I was shocked more hadn't been done. PTSD from medical experiences is a critical aspect of patient care.

So what did we find?

~25% of pts w IBD report medical PTSD from illness/treatment

Hospitalizations are a big source of #IBDPTSD

Logically IBDPTSD is associated w poorer outcomes
