I always forget the share feature on #Android does more than just share things with others through messaging apps. Want to translate Japanese text? Send it to your #Jisho dictionary app. Want to open a URL? Send it to Firefox. Need to send files using #LocalSend? Send the files to the LocalSend app and send to your other device from there. Need a barcode with some text? Send it to Binary Eye.

It's so useful, but also so hidden I just forget it exists.

@milan wenn du Daten cross-plattform verschicken willst kann ich nur LocalSend empfehlen. Das beste was es gibt um lokal Daten an Geräte zu schicken.

LocalSend: Share files to nearby devices

LocalSend is a free, open-source, cross-platform file sharing tool that allows you to share files to nearby devices.

Send files privately. No cloud. No trace.

I’m working towards something for #secure / #private / #simple #P2P #filetransfer. It isnt as “simple” as it could be, im still working on it, but ive got it down to:

Zero-installation as a #PWA

Zero-registration by using local-only storage

#P2P-authentication using #WebCryptoAPI

Fast #datatransfer using #WebRTC

It’s far from finished, but i think ive got it “usable” enough to ask for feedback on it.

When comparing this project to things like #wormhole, #onionshare, #localsend, #syncthing, #croc, #sphynctershare and countless others. the key difference in my approach is that its a #webapp thats ready to go without any "real" setup process. you just need a browser.

I’m aware there are things like #SFTP and several other established protocols and tools. I started doing this because I was learning about #WebRTC and it seems suprisingly capable. This isnt ready to replace any existing apps or services.

(Note: I know you guys are typically interested in #opensource code. this project is a spin-off from a bigger project: https://github.com/positive-intentions/chat)

Let me know what you think about the app, features and experience you would expect from a tool like this.

---

SUPER IMPORTANT NOTES TO PREVENT MISLEADING:

These projects are not ready to replace any existing apps or services.

These projects are not peer-reviewed or security audited.

The chat-app is #opensource for transparency (as linked above)... but the file-app is not open souce at all (especially spicy when not reviewed or audited.).

All projects behind positive-intentions are provided for testing and demo purposes only.

Specifically, I am interested in anyone with informed opinions on how secure it is. Has it been audited?

Je sais qu'il y en a plein d'autres. Mais la base de la démarche, c'est qu'elle comprenne qu'en terme de logiciels, il y a moins bien, mais c'est plus cher.

À son tour maintenant de les recommander tous autour d'elle :)

I thought my SSH key was compromised lol
but the server logs didn't reveal any unauthorized access
then I realized that I recently used LocalSend while connected to the WireGuard tunnel! 🫠🫠

That's why "port 53317" in the abuse report seemed really familiar lol

#ssh #localsend #wireguard #hetzner

Esperimenti con #FreeBSD + #XFCE:

✅ minor consumo di RAM rispetto a #linux;

#porting dei programmi usati abitualmente;

☑ gestore grafico delle connessioni di rete;

☑ porting di #LocalSend, sostituibile con #FileZilla;

❌ gestore grafico dei dispositivi #bluetooth;

❌ possibilità di cambiare #wallpaper ( #bug di XFCE);

❌ porting di #Onboard; si potrebbe sostituire con #xvkbd, ma non supporta tutte le lettere accentate e non consente di scriverle maiuscole;

@cocoafrog

Well Apple having a single ecosystem and being product-first doesnt help here. They have a lot of stuff like Airdrop or iMessage that can be replaced but not easily

GrapheneOS is not google-based, but that comes at the "cost" of no integrated cloud storage, backup, transfer etc.

Also small things like a well integrated and working password manager, #KeepassDX and #Bitwarden are okay replacements, probably more secure but less easy

Airdrop can be replaced with #Localsend
