@lianna Actually, only one branch of
#Minetest is called
#Luanti.
There are multiple commercial branches with different names, most of them copied from one initial commercial branch which was called "Multicraft". "Multicraft was created by a man named Maksym Hamarnyk.
One of the leads in my Minetest project worked on Multicraft with Maksym and I'm familiar with some dot-net inside stories on that basis.
In a humorous note, the Minetest core devs at the time objected publicly to "Multicraft's" commercial orientation, but behind the scenes they asked Maksym for a share of the money. He is believed to have struck a deal, in particular, with sfan5 aka the Ninja Kitten. In an odd note, sfan5 seems to be one of the
#vlc project leads.
Hamarnyk is rumored to have sold his share of his commercial branch and retired. Ditto for sfan5. However, about 4 commercial branches now exist. I don't recommend them as they're walled gardens.
I myself maintain, with assistance from others, the only branch of Minetest that meets some basic criteria, including exclusively non-anonymous leads, backwards compatibility with both 0.4 and 0.5 protocols, not a walled garden, support for multiple modsets as part of the core project, and a focus on stability and robustness.
We also have some of the most advanced APIs and features of any Minetest. The skins system, as one example, has been redesigned from the ground level up in part by a developer with 30 years experience in 3D modeling. We've gone back, as well, to revitalize and modernize lost mobs and other mods dating as far back as 2011.
This is Final Minetest, which may be reviewed at:
https://minetest.org/Additionally, we host about 10,000 Minetest git repos at:
https://git.minetest.io/Mods which have disappeared everywhere else may be found at the latter "git" site. This includes mods that have been purged from the Luanti "ContentDB". We have most or all of the mods that existed at the ContentDB on various snapshot dates, even mods that weren't in "git" form at that site.
We host mods of other types that are taken down from Github as well.
To explain further: I'm one of only two people who date back to Spring 2012 in Minetest, who have invested effort and high hours continuously for the 13 years, and who are non-anonymous. The other is Andrew Ward aka Rubenwardy. Now that VanessaE has retired, nobody else meets those criteria.
Maciej Kasatkin is still around and has played a role in Final Minetest. He was more important than anybody else in Minetest but VanessaE. However, he is, and has always been, anonymous. It's really down to just Andrew and me.
There are a few other promising core engine branches such as McKaygerhard's Minenux. However, most of them are believed to be stalled.
Luanti is simply what's left of the
minetest.net branch of Minetest. The name change occurred for two reasons: "Luanti" is a clever and euphonious name [clever in that it starts with "Lua", one of the languages used]. And the "Minetest" name arguably belongs to me.
This thread isn't for debating the latter point. If somebody wishes to discuss it, they should ask Perttu Ahola first to comment on the deal that he made with me in 2016.
The dot-net project figured that it was best to go with a less clunky name and to put some distance between itself and me at the same time. Ironically, this has allowed me to capture more of the web traffic related to "Minetest". However, "Luanti" is a perfect name regardless.
Luanti is certainly a live project. However, ill-advised decisions in recent years have erased the once promising future that the project had 10 years ago. Luanti is not only an ex-Minetest now but, really, an ex-parrot. [ex-parrot is a 1970s reference for old people.]
In 2015, individual worlds such as my Moontest had up to 50,000 visitors. 10 years later, in 2025, there are only a handful of worlds across all of the non-commercial branches that have more than a trickle of traffic.
Non-commercial Minetest hosts with a significant number of worlds are down largely just to me and to Edgy McEdge aka Stella Valkyrie.
Edgy is my pretend grand-daughter [formerly my pretend grandson]. I can say that she plans to continue hosting for now at Chiwi [formerly EdgyNet] but is preoccupied with IRL issues. If she shuts down her project, Minetest [and Luanti] in its past form is done.
As a note to friends of Edgy aka Stella, I've spoken recently with her by phone and she's doing well in her new State and living situation.
Final Minetest [aka Final MT] is focused on projects in the edutech and simulation arenas. Not so much on being a "free Minecraft", though we plan to add some of the Mineclone descendants that Wuzzy has talked about. Possibly even Wuzzy's own current "_game". [The term "_game" is another way to refer to a modset.]
We expect to be the last significant non-commercial Minetest standing.
