Chelsea Vowel (of Métis in Space podcast) is developing a Cree language course (Plains Y dialect, standard alphabet), free online for absolute beginners. Dialects span Canada. The broader Algonquian language family includes the US midwest & east coast.

So far, 2.5 of 12 modules are up: each a set of short YouTube videos. She previously taught at University of Alberta but wished Cree were easier to access. Captions planned.

I Speak Many Languages. Masking Follows Me in ALL of Them

I’m multilingual. But behind each language was a mask—until I found the one that didn’t come with trauma. Turns out, fluency isn’t freedom. Identity is.

Who am I?

“When I die, I want to make sure that when my ancestors say to me: ‘Kia ora, nau mai, haere mai,’ I won’t say to them: ‘I’m sorry, but I can’t speak te reo.’” — Witi Ihimaera, on learning te reo at 80. #TeReo #TeReoMāori #Indigedon #LanguageReclamation #LanguageBack #Māori

A 'forever language' - te Wiki o te Reo Māori marks 52 years of extraordinary progress

A forever language still needs to be fought for, especially in the current environment where the government has moved to minimise the official use of te reo.

Common mistakes in reo Māori - Siena Yates

One of the scariest things as a new learner of te reo Māori is speaking the reo out loud. What if you make a mistake? What if everyone laughs at you? What if you accidentally offend someone? What if you can never show your face at a reo class or marae ever again? #TeWikiOTeReoMāori #Māori #Indigenous #Indigedon #LanguageReclamation

“If you get too caught up on mistakes all the time, you get into analysis paralysis, where you focus so much on not messing up that it stunts your ability to speak.” — Hona Black on correcting errors in te reo Māori.

#introduction

I'm a #Linguist with research on Taiwanese (臺灣本土語言) language vitality and revitalisation. My broader interests include language policy and language management within multilingual contexts.

I speak a few #languages (listed in my profile), and trying to relearn my personal #HeritageLanguage (s) which I lost as I grew up.

Would love to connect with others who are involved with similar interests.

I have been remiss in posting here that the #Tunica Language Textbook is published and available for purchase![1] Here’s the press release.[2]

If this sort of book is up your alley, have a look at it (you can preview it on Google Books)[3] and let me know what you think. Advice is crucial, as we’re planning a second textbook.
