The federal elections leaders debate is happening now and I am amazed that APTN is broadcasting a live translated event in Plains Cree.

I speak my James Bay Mushkegowuk Cree dialect fluently and I can understand about 50% of the broadcast and it's beautiful.

It would be like an English speaking person in Canada listening to a heavily inflected English with a Scottish or Irish accent.

New #introduction post!

I'm Alicia and I'm a fibre artist (#dyeing #handspinning #felting #needlefelting #weaving #crochet #embroidery #upcycling #sewing) with interests in #mandala #art #psychedelicart #sacredgeometry #neurographicart and #watercolors.

My family and I run a business called @Fibre2Fabric where we dye all sorts of exotic #fibre #yarn, and #fabric.

I live in the country with my partner and our 6 #cats, 3 #dogs, #snake and #crestedgecko where I enjoy my many interests. (#gardening #plants #herbalism #fungi #music #ukulele #piano #dancing #flowart #reading #writing #tarot #poetry #haiku #cozygames and I'm getting more into #opensource / #linux)

When I say flow art, I mean spinning props like #hulahoop #leviwand #puppyhammer #poi #staff #silkfans #firefans etc.

I love #languagelearning. I studied #German and #Spanish as a kid, took #Japanese in uni, and I'm currently studying #ASL #Cree #Tokipona #Spanish and #Chinese. I also dabble in #French and #Latin sometimes and I'm learning #Greggshorthand to write faster. Cree is my favourite language and Spanish is my second.

I've been cursed since childhood with that lovely trifecta of #heds #pots and #mcas. Healing slowly but surely.

Hope I get to meet even more cool people the algorithms would normally drown out on other social media sites. I love it here!

After decades of artistic liberties, folk singer Buffy Sainte-Marie' admits she is not #Canadian and her #Polaris music prize was revoked.

That same day, the #Canadian #Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences said in a news release: "Following a thorough review, consultations with the CARAS #IndigenousMusic Advisory Committee, and in light of recent information, including Ms. Sainte-Marie’s confirmation that she is not Canadian, #CARAS will revoke Buffy Sainte-Marie's #JUNOAwards and Canadian Music #HallofFame induction in accordance with its eligibility requirements."

While long swirling rumors of native ancestry go unchecked , it has been investigated that the octogenarian folk music artist had no genetic ties to indigenous tribal ancestry. Sainte-Marie has said that when she was a young adult she was #adopted by a #Cree family in the Canadian #province of #Saskatchewan and has "lived with uncertainty" about her true heritage.

A concept that's been knocking around my head since I encountered it in Shalene Wuttunee Jobin's "Upholding Indigenous Economic Relationships" is the #nehiyawewin (#Cree, Plains Y dialect) "kasispowicikew," which translates as "bringing the past to the future." While understanding the present is important, we study #history to build a good future in light of the past - what's critical to carry forward/leave behind and the wonderful richness of historical experience.

If you ever want to read about positive Indigenous stories, the Nation, a bi-weekly magazine based in Quebec with stories about the Cree on the Eastern coast of James Bay is a great source of information. The James Bay east coast Cree are cousins to the west coast Cree where I am from.
