This was an interesting one to write, as the grammar competition "worldview" it involves is one that I thought was misguided until about 2014–16. The main bit I'm responsible for is the section defending the approach against critiques of the kind that people like me had levelled against it in earlier work. The Companion to Diachronic and Historical #linguistics is now out, and I have a co-authored chapter in it, on grammar competition and variational learning. I was particularly pleased to be able to co-author with Joel Wallenberg and Caroline Heycock, both of whom have done very cool work that's been an inspiration to me since I was doing my PhD, as well as again with the ever-excellent Henri Kauhanen. Because we are embedded in tech monopolies, something like three companies' products need to add those words in order for them to end up in documents. #Microsoft and #Apple are now de-facto the Acadamie Anglais. Not people determining language, but companies imposing it.

But I don't think that's exactly what's going on, here. I think voice-to-text and spellcheckers added those words, and probably many others, and we're all just kind of going with it.
