A friend was suprised to see "bolt" in the category "eat voraciously" in yesterdays NYT Games' Connections, so I did a little corpus study:

Of 100 randomly selected occurences of "bolt" in COCA, 0 mean 'to eat'

Of the 123 occurrences of "bolted down" in COCA, 4 mean 'to eat' and 1 'to drink'.

So I'm not suprised he was suprised.

TIL: If you're speaking German, you're choosing grammatical cases based on how the object you're talking about moves in relation to a search domain.

If you're a native speaker like me, you're doing this intuitively, and I find consciously thinking about it really fascinating (and also super weird).

The Chinese party-state's campaign to erase "minority languages" continues

"A years-long trend of replacing Mongolian-, Tibetan-, and Uyghur-medium instruction with Mandarin Chinese-medium instruction is now codified in law. Students in these communities will now only be taught their mother tongue as a single, standalone class; all other classes will be taught in Chinese."
