The #22spot #ladybeetle #Psyllobora #vigintiduopunctata (#Cucujiformia) is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. The adults and larvae #feed #mycetophagously on #fungi, specifically on powdery #mildews. When threatened, the beetle shows #thanatosis (plays dead) and secretes a defensive secretion. M. Dillen et al. (2017) studied #multitrophic #interactions between ladybird, mildew, and #oak trees.

Anyone else noticing an absolute boom in Adonis ladybird (Hippodamia variegata) numbers this summer compared to previous years? I normally see perhaps 2 per year but almost 100% of sites I have visited this year have had at least 1-2, so running total is closer to 30!

(This is southeast UK.)

And one more unexpected Nature encounter in #Bochum after the birds - a #beetle (sitting on a restaurant menu of all places) which I'm pretty certain is a multicoloured Asian #LadyBeetle (Harmonia axyridis) - albeit a not very common color form which I've only found exactly like this in https://www.naturfotos-naeher-hingeschaut.de/insekten-gliederfuesser/kaefer/marienkaefer/asiatischer-marienkaefer/. CORRECTION: this is a spotted willow leaf beetle (Chrysomela vigintipunctata) I now think after discussing this case with two beetle experts!
