LG has discontinued the DualUp LCD display ( 28MQ780-B ), it seems, sometime in the last 12 months or so. It is a 28-inch "4K"-class monitor that is nearly square, 2560x2880 in resolution with a 16:18 ( = 8:9 = 4:4.5 ) aspect ratio.

I have this display and it is the best display I have ever used in my life. I use it rotated 90 degree on the Mac, running in a "HiDPI" mode that is effectively 2304x2048, scaled. It looks amazing and is perfect for my needs.

I have used this as the main display on my Mac Studio since 2022. I always intended to buy a spare for when this one dies, but I missed the chance, so I setup an elaborate real-time monitoring system on eBay that has been alerting me the instant one appears on the site. They often go for twice retail or more.

This weekend one appeared that was local, and I talked to the seller and he told me it had only 490 hours on-time (which I've since verified), is flawless, and would meet me for pickup. He actually dropped the price and we did the sale outside of eBay. I paid about $200 over retail.

But, now I have a backup! My square, UNIX-perfect system can live on well beyond what it might otherwise have.

Bizarre source of excitement - but I'm so happy right now.

LG Display starts mass-producing LTPO-like 1 Hz LCD displays for laptops

Dell XPS laptops will be the first to use the display tech that reaches up to 120 Hz.

LG and BOE are making power-saving laptop screens with 1-120 Hz refresh rates

Last fall Intel and BOE announced that they were working together on OLED displays for laptops that could drop the refresh rate as low as 1 Hz to save power when users are viewing static images. Now LG says it’s the first company to start mass production of an LCD display that works similarly.

I'm sort of amazed that large segmented #LCD displays still exist as a new-business thing in 2026.

Family member just got a new exercise bike and it has a white-on-blue screen full of illegible tiny words and glyphs, with all the smeary charm and poor viewing angles of a 1989 Toshiba T1000.

Considering that each design is one-off, I can't imagine it's cheaper to do a short run of bespoke panels than to just use a commodity 640x480 TFT module and spend a nickel on a bigger MCU to drive it.
