Il Fatto Quotidiano: Israele querela il New York Times: “Diffamatorio l’articolo sugli abusi sessuali ai danni dei detenuti palestinesi”
Tel Aviv dichiara guerra anche al New York Times per un articolo che riporta abusi sessuali su detenuti palestinesi nelle carceri israeliane. “A seguito della pubblicazione di Nicholas Kristof di una delle menzogne più orribili e distorte mai pubblicate contro lo Stato di Israele sulla stampa moderna – si legge in un comunicato del ministero degli Esteri israeliano -, il primo ministro Benyamin Netanyahu e il ministro degli Esteri Gideon Sàar hanno ordinato l’avvio di un’azione legale per diffamazione contro il New York Times“. L’articolo “si basa su fonti non verificate legate a reti connesse ad Hamas. La fonte principale è l’Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, il cui fondatore Ramy Abdu ha legami documentati con alti dirigenti di Hamas. Questo non è giornalismo. È propaganda di Hamas, una distorsione della verità e dei fatti”, ha aggiunto il ministero degli Esteri.
L’articolo, pubblicato l’11 maggio, affronta il tema delle violenze sessuali subite da detenuti palestinesi nelle carceri e nei centri di detenzione israeliani dopo il 7 ottobre 2023. Tel Aviv declares war on the New York Times over an article reporting sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. “Following the publication by Nicholas Kristof of one of the most horrific and distorted lies ever published against the State of Israel in modern print – reads a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar have ordered the initiation of a libel lawsuit against the New York Times.” The article “is based on unverified sources linked to networks connected to Hamas. The main source is the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the founder of which, Ramy Abdu, has documented links with senior Hamas officials. This is not journalism. It is Hamas propaganda, a distortion of truth and facts,” the Foreign Ministry added.
The article, published on May 11th, addresses the issue of sexual violence suffered by Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons and detention centers since October 7, 2023. The text is based on interviews with former Palestinian detainees, testimonies from lawyers, humanitarian workers, and reports from international organizations, and describes a presumed system of humiliation, torture, and abuse in some Israeli detention facilities, including cases of beatings, forced nudity, threats of rape, and sexual assaults.

Novantatré voti su novantatré. Lunedì 11 maggio la Knesset ha approvato un tribunale speciale autorizzato a comminare la pena di morte ai palestinesi condannati per l’attacco del 7 ottobre 2023. Lo riporta l’Associated Press. I processi saranno trasmessi in diretta. Il paragone con il processo del 1962 al criminale nazista Adolf Eichmann lo fanno gli stessi proponenti.
Tre organizzazioni israeliane per i diritti umani — il Centro per la difesa dell’individuo, il Centro legale Adalah e il Comitato pubblico contro la tortura — in una nota dell’11 maggio definiscono la legge «uno spettacolo punitivo e retributivo» che subordina «ogni principio di giustizia penale equa». Le sentenze potranno essere pronunciate a maggioranza.
Lo stesso giorno il New York Times pubblica l’inchiesta di Nicholas Kristof, “The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians”: quattordici testimoni descrivono stupri e abusi sessuali sistemici nelle carceri israeliane. Tre di loro minorenni. Risposta del ministero degli Esteri israeliano: «calunnia del sangue». Secondo il Comitato pubblico contro la tortura, Israele detiene oggi 1.300 palestinesi di Gaza senza accusa formale.
La rima Eichmann vale per ciò che la legge mostra. Ciò che la legge non mostra resta fuori inquadratura: i detenuti senza accusa, le testimonianze di Kristof, le condizioni del dottor Hussam Abu Safiya, direttore dell’ospedale Kamal Adwan, detenuto dal 27 dicembre 2024 e descritto «quasi irriconoscibile» da tre prigionieri rilasciati.
A Marmaris cinquantasette imbarcazioni della Global Sumud Flotilla si sono riunite l’11 maggio in assemblea per decidere se ripartire. Saif Abukeshek e Thiago Ávila, liberati dopo dieci giorni di detenzione, ricordano che restano dentro 9.500 palestinesi. Nessuno di loro avrà un processo in diretta.

Ninety-three votes out of ninety-three. On Monday, May 11, the Knesset approved a special court authorized to sentence Palestinians to death for the attack of October 7, 2023. The Associated Press reports this. The trials will be broadcast live. Those promoting the comparison with the 1962 trial of Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann are doing so themselves.
Three Israeli human rights organizations – the Society for the Defense of the Individual, the Adalah Legal Center, and the Public Committee Against Torture – in a May 11 statement describe the law as “a punitive and retributive spectacle” that subordinates “every principle of fair criminal justice.” Sentences can be handed down by majority vote.
On the same day, the New York Times publishes Nicholas Kristof’s investigation, “The Silence That Meets the Rape of Palestinians”: fourteen witnesses describe systematic rapes and abuses in Israeli prisons. Three of them are minors.
