Tel Aviv dichiara guerra anche al New York Times per un articolo che riporta abusi sessuali su detenuti palestinesi nelle carceri israeliane. “A seguito della pubblicazione di Nicholas Kristof di una delle menzogne più orribili e distorte mai pubblicate contro lo Stato di Israele sulla stampa moderna – si legge in un comunicato del ministero degli Esteri israeliano -, il primo ministro Benyamin Netanyahu e il ministro degli Esteri Gideon Sàar hanno ordinato l’avvio di un’azione legale per diffamazione contro il New York Times“. L’articolo “si basa su fonti non verificate legate a reti connesse ad Hamas. La fonte principale è l’Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, il cui fondatore Ramy Abdu ha legami documentati con alti dirigenti di Hamas. Questo non è giornalismo. È propaganda di Hamas, una distorsione della verità e dei fatti”, ha aggiunto il ministero degli Esteri.

Tel Aviv declares war on the New York Times over an article reporting sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons. “Following the publication by Nicholas Kristof of one of the most horrific and distorted lies ever published against the State of Israel in modern print – reads a statement from the Israeli Foreign Ministry – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar have ordered the initiation of a libel lawsuit against the New York Times.” The article “is based on unverified sources linked to networks connected to Hamas. The main source is the Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, the founder of which, Ramy Abdu, has documented links with senior Hamas officials. This is not journalism. It is Hamas propaganda, a distortion of truth and facts,” the Foreign Ministry added.

The article, published on May 11th, addresses the issue of sexual violence suffered by Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons and detention centers since October 7, 2023. Karim ha un anno. Il 22 marzo, secondo il referto medico depositato dall’Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, l’esercito israeliano lo ha prelevato nel campo profughi di Al-Maghazi, Gaza centrale, e lo ha sottoposto a ustioni da sigaretta, punture e una ferita da chiodo. Ramy Abdu, presidente del Monitor, ha dichiarato che il bambino è stato torturato «nel tentativo di fare pressione sul padre ed estorcergli una confessione». Dopo dieci ore, è stato restituito alla famiglia tramite la Croce Rossa in stato di shock. Il padre, Osama Abu Nassar, resta detenuto.
Il caso ha un contesto preciso. Francesca Albanese, relatrice speciale Onu sui Territori palestinesi occupati, ha presentato al Consiglio per i diritti umani il rapporto “Torture and Genocide”. Il documento classifica la tortura nei territori occupati come “a structural feature of the ongoing Israeli genocide and broader settler-colonial apartheid”. Nel 2025, l’amministrazione Trump aveva già inserito Albanese nella lista OFAC del Tesoro, il registro riservato a trafficanti e terroristi.
“Torture and Genocide” richiama l’articolo 1 della Convenzione contro la tortura. La sanzione ad Albanese era arrivata sei giorni dopo la pubblicazione del rapporto sull’economia di quello che la Corte internazionale di giustizia definisce genocidio. La sequenza ha una logica: chi registra i fatti viene colpito prima che vengano smentiti.
