E in salotto c’era Kissinger.

E seduto in salotto c’era Henry Kissinger”.
E in salotto c’era Kissinger. Volevano che convincessi Ruggiero” proviene da Il Fatto Quotidiano.

D’Alema reveals the unpublished background on the Berlusconi government (and the US maneuvers): “When he won in 2001 he called me Gianni Agnelli. And in the living room there was Kissinger. They wanted me to convince Ruggiero.”

“I would like to begin with a personal story and I believe it’s initially unpublished.” This is how the former Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Massimo D’Alema, began his presentation at the Stampa Estera headquarters in Rome, of the book *Berlusconi, the world according to him*, a lesson in foreign policy written by ambassadors Giovanni Castellaneta and Marco Carnelos.

D’Alema recounts that in 2001, “when Berlusconi won the elections, just a few days after, Gianni Agnelli, with whom I had a good personal relationship, called me and asked me to go urgently to his house.” D’Alema went and the “Avvocato” (Lawyer) greeted him. “He said we have an urgent matter to address, we need you, there’s a friend with me in the living room who wants to speak to you. And sitting in the living room was Henry Kissinger.” What did Agnelli and Kissinger want to talk about with a Prime Minister just exiting Palazzo Chigi and at that time in opposition? “They told me they were concerned that the Berlusconi government was being born – he recounts – and that they wanted to ensure that the Berlusconi government had a foreign policy guide to guarantee the seriousness and continuity of Italian foreign policy. I said it seemed like a good idea, but I didn’t really understand what I could contribute as a figure from the defeated party. ‘We want the Foreign Minister to be Ambassador Ruggiero, only that he doesn’t do it if you don’t encourage him to do it.’ I said: ‘But you’ll need to inform Berlusconi of this. Lawyer Agnelli told me don’t worry about this, I’ll take care of it.’” Then “Ruggiero was summoned, who later became a minister in the Berlusconi government. I said I had doubts about the stability of this solution and Ruggiero was very reluctant. It lasted only a few months because after a confrontation, Ruggiero left.”

The article D’Alema reveals the unpublished background on the Berlusconi government (and the US maneuvers): “When he won in 2001, Gianni Agnelli called me. And in the living room was Kissinger. They wanted me to convince Ruggiero” is from Il Fatto Quotidiano.

The Iran War Just Broke the Petrodollar (Bloomberg)

– 'The virtuous loop that has seen America underwrite stability in the Middle East in exchange for Gulf states recycling their dollar revenues into US Treasuries has been broken.
The understanding traces back to 1974, when Henry Kissinger struck one of the most consequential financial deals in modern history. Saudi Arabia would price its oil in dollars and park the surpluses in US assets — Treasuries above all. Other Gulf states followed. In exchange, America provided security guarantees and a stable global order.

The arrangement was elegant in its circularity: Oil consumers paid dollars for energy, those dollars flowed to Riyadh and Abu Dhabi, and from there back into Washington’s debt. For 50 years, this petrodollar loop quietly subsidized American borrowing costs and cemented the greenback’s role as the world’s reserve currency.
The US-Israeli war with Iran has fractured this arrangement — at both ends...'

The Kissinger Tapes | National Security Archive

Washington, D.C., March 19, 2026 - On August 10, 1973, National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger placed a call to Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird to complain about U.S. officials who were participating in congressional hearings to investigate the secret bombing of Cambodia. As the Nixon administration’s cover up was unraveling, Kissinger was angry that “these @*%&* over there are acting as if it happened on the moon”; he demanded that Secretary Laird defend the original Nixon/Kissinger decision to launch clandestine attacks on Cambodia.

More generally: the #Trumpezoids (I do not assume that the critical decisions are made by Trump as an individual) seem to think they can wield American imperial power to accomplish frivolous goals, in ways that would have appalled #Polk or #Seward or #McKinley or #Kissinger — and that power will emerge from their misadventures undiminished.

It won't.

@mossyrua That scenario is consistent with the general concept that the current performance of the #USA economy is much closer to its theoretical optimum potential than is the case for the economy of #Europe. The #USA currently benefits from an intricate network of alliances accumulated by decades or even centuries of astute empire building by people like #Seward, #McKinley, #Kissinger, etc. Trump is now squandering that. Meanwhile, #Europe hasn't even truly unified itself. It has a cornucopia of unrealized advantages to be gained — like an alliance with #China.
