Many migrants know this question: “Why did you come to Germany?” I write about why it’s rarely as innocent as it sounds. We often talk about migration as if it were just a personal decision — ignoring wars, repression, the arms trade, and Europe’s part in all of it. I try to unpack what it means to be asked such a personal question in that larger context.

What happens when a majority group responds to systemic struggle with the word "too"? This post explores the idea of "derailing"—how universalizing experiences can inadvertently silence the specific realities of immigrants in Germany.

New Post: A brief #CompteRendu of how institutions respond to a discrimination-related complaint in a German language textbook.

From a classroom observation → publisher → language school → NGOs & academics → outcome: a map of shifting responsibility.

Compte Rendu of Hamid’s Story Series: Disappearing Responsibility

I wrote this series first of all to vent about it, but also to preserve a trace of what was said and how it was answered—to keep both the story and its afterlife visible.

Dead Ends: What Happens After a Complaint Leaves the Language School

I would ask them to keep in mind that many of us came here because of state violence or political pressure, and that we are often more skeptical (because of prior experiences with the state) and afraid (due to our fragile status as immigrants) in this country.

A concrete case from German language education: a textbook narrative, a complaint, and how a language school responded — appreciation without responsibility.

I said that it is not fair to ask an immigrant to write such complaints to BAMF. They asked why. I answered: because of the dependency relations we have with these institutions.

Hamid’s Story and the Politics of Gratitude in German Language Course Book

I am still not sure how to tell this story, but I guess it makes sense to start with what I found problematic in the first place, which I believe I explained quite well in my letter to the publisher of the book. So, everything here is like the original

First part of a small series based on true experiences. The text describes how everyday discrimination is encountered and how different institutions respond — sometimes clearly, often very distantly. It also touches on the uncertainty of whether reporting is worth the effort.

What “Kanak” Means and Why I Claim This Identity

The term 'Kanak' originated from the Hawaiian word 'kanaka' meaning 'person' or 'human being', but in Germany acquired a derogatory meaning towards immigrant workers (Wiki). Kanak is a term that originally served as a derogatory label in Germany, aimed at immigrant workers—particularly those of Turkish origin—who arrived during
