The History of the World in 4 Beers

YouTube

Whoops! An new medieval cooking channel just dropped:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAsEn0ux5o4

Your actions feed my blog! 🥰

Energized this morning by readings about 19th century riots in Germany over the price of beer. I've written about Munich's 1844 riot before, but there were many more through the middle century.

Finally getting a chance to learn about them in more depth.

So, I’ve been reading Civil War era ladies’ magazines all day, and I found something that surprised me. It’s a kebab recipe from 1863 Philadelphia.

This appeared in the wildly popular periodical Godey’s Lady’s Book, which at this time had 150,000 subscribers all over the States. Curry powder, ghee, ginger, and lemon peel—19th century food wasn’t as bland as you’d think

#Lenten Stuff - a #16thCentury #ballad by William Elderton.
From MS Ashmole 48.

A good description of #Lent in Tudor England, with complaints (among other things) about an excess of #fish, #leeks and #nettles. It also mentions the traditional figure of #JackaLent, a stuffed effigy, usually made of straw, which was dragged through the streets during Lent, and burned on #PalmSunday.

#avocado FUN FACT:
Back in the #90s people ate avocados unripe, because they preferred the green and shiny ones. The California Avocado Commisson created a mascot; Mr. Ripe Guy, whose job was to convince people that ripe #avocados may look gross, but they’re actually super #tasty. They launched a contest to find his wife,” Ms. Ripe”.
This was the ad.
