Wishing a meaningful and resistance-filled #Lenten season for my #Christian friends who observe it.
May the season remind you of the ways that #Jesus lived his life as an organizer of poor people to seek a better way to be in the world through non-cooperation with the empire.

Lent helps us understand that we are not alone, and God is our help at hand in times of trouble. #Lenten is a time not only to let go but also to let in and be nourished for the days to come after #Lent.

#Lenten Stuff - a #16thCentury #ballad by William Elderton.
From MS Ashmole 48.

A good description of #Lent in Tudor England, with complaints (among other things) about an excess of #fish, #leeks and #nettles. It also mentions the traditional figure of #JackaLent, a stuffed effigy, usually made of straw, which was dragged through the streets during Lent, and burned on #PalmSunday.

#TishHarrisonWarren connects the Commandments “I am the LORD your G-d…you shall have no other gods before Me…you shall not bow down to [graven images] nor serve them” (Exodus 20); the injunction “you shall love the LORD your G-d with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5); and the #Lenten season’s invitation to consider critically what draws our time, attention, and effort:

Worthy goals like freedom and autonomy can harm others if we hold them above all else.
