Saturday April 18th. Garden journal notes. The perennial nettle plant is wonderful. This harvest aspired to be steamed with sambal kelapa spiced carrots. This is an early green for southern Minnesota. Also the plant spreads aggressively by shallow runners and deep runners. Also the common name is stinging nettles. #nettles, #growyourown, #nodig, #compost, #minnesota, #Zone4b, #gardening
All I want is to reach the chimney pot and wire frame in the corner of the garden. Can I reach it? That's a big ol' nope, because my #garden is a #mess of thigh-high thick and lustrous nettles. I'm tackling some of it but I definitely want to leave a patch of the #nettles in situ as long as possible. #CheesebeesPhotoChallenge2026Week16 #ItsLikeAJungleSometimes
@Broadfork, @LifeTimeCooking The Garden Amendment book is a great reference book. It’s on the kitchen table today. #gardenamendments, #fermentation, #soilbiology, #nettles, #comfrey, #dandelion, #minnesota, #Zone4b
It’s been a bizarre warm winter/spring transition here in Colorado. But I’m certainly not unhappy for an early yield of fresh nettles.

I know it was doomed but I miss the era of the community stinging nettle patch next to the Wark Park children's playground

Wow! There's something lying here!

Among the greenery. So green. So dense. And greenery everywhere. Everything is green everywhere. And a bright sunny day. And there, among the grass. There's something amazing. Some kind of iron. And sticks lying. Right in the grass. And everything is slowly growing back. There's the usual grass. That plant-like chlorophytum.

A new flower has appeared, one I’ve waited on for over a year: Blumenbachia insignis!
Hailing from coastal southern Brazil into northern Argentina, this is both a beautiful and wicked little plant that forms scrambling stems covered in fuzzy looking serrated leaves that are quite attractive as a groundcover…but that fuzz is misleading, for this is a nettle. Rub your hand past it and it will sting for several minutes following so one must handle with care. But worth it for that lush appearance, and the blooms that follow. Flowers have four or five very weird, deep-keeled boat shape petals (literally they are hollow and cup the anthers at their open edge) that surround a striking red and yellow cluster of styles. If all the stems bloom simultaneously it is quite a show of tricolor flowers.
This is what one may consider a “warm-up” easy species to the Loasaceae family, all of which are blooming nettles or similar and the genus Loasa the stars with similarly tricolor flowers but often with even more flamboyant white or yellow petals; I am on my third attempt with L. tricolor and will hopefully see it to blooming as well.
