#peas as a #growYouOwn #gardening crop

Until recently, never bothered much with peas, bcs
[1] they used to play havoc with my digestion
[2] they're such niggly things to harvest
[3] niggly things to pod
[4] untidy, sprawling things in their bed.

But since discovering..
[1] some seed
[2] how they managed themselves if growing in an unmanaged area,
[3] ways of eating them that are perfectly digestible,
[4] they're very good source of protein, enough so to be in powder form on "health-food" and "bodybuilding" shelves, and hence
[5] satisfying in the same way as heavier protein
... I've been really enjoying growing them!

The first autumn sowing in the "pea cascade" ⬆️ post is now fizzling-out, due to it being too hot/dry up there, while an April-ish sowing I did is now producing well in a cooler spot with shading near a sprinkler

but picking and podding a useful-protein size portion ~200g - is optimistically taking about 20 minutes.

Anyone got neat solutions to either of these time-consuming problems for one with too much to do?

Today I planted a sweet bay magnolia, 3 elderberries, a chest high tulip tree I grew from a 2 inch seedling, 2 blackberries, 2 Asian pears, a current, 3 raspberries, 4 comfreys, and a couple other things with labels that I can’t remember.

Still lots more to plant.

Exhausted. Good night xo

In theory, a full orchard per month? I don't have room for them all. I already gave one away, and potted three more.
🎶 Movin' to the country, gonna eat a lot of peaches 🎶

Our young plant cultivation is progressing well. Even though it is not yet fully optimized, the temperature, humidity, and light are already quite good. Watering is the next thing we should tackle now ;-)

I've been trying some pumpkin recipes this year to make use of all the pumpkins we grew. So far, this soup is a new favourite.

400-500g pumpkin
1/2 yellow onion
1-2 cloves of garlic
100ml chicken stock
100ml oat milk (or any other type of milk)
1 tbsp celery
Salt
Black pepper

Just cook it all down until soft and then blend smooth. Done.

Topped with:
Heavy cream or sour cream
Paprika powder
Toasted pumpkin seeds

For the toasted pumpkin seeds, I washed and dried the seeds, let a pan get ripping hot, and then toasted them quickly under constant movement. A small amount of fat (peanut oil in this case) in the pan to finish helps salt stick to the seeds if desired.

April 20, 2025. A good gardening day. Tomatoes and basil starts were potted up. We moved back leaf mulch and added compost to the onion rows, then planted Ruby Red onions. The Yellow Parma onions were planted yesterday. The free range earthworm numbers are good. The garden has been a no dig garden for 20 years. Southern Minnesota has a forecast of 25 mm of rain overnight. #minnesota, #zone4b, #growyouown, #gardening, #nodig, #compost.

In this week's #allotment postcard we pot on the chillies and get on with some other seedy activities.
