Papst Leo XIV. erntet aktuell für seine klaren Aussagen zu den Kriegen in der Welt sehr viel Zustimmung - aber auch Ablehnung! Es lohnt sich daher, seine Worte etwas näher zu betrachten.
Papst Leo XIV. ist Augustiner - seine Worte sollten also ausgehend von Augustinus' Lehre vom „gerechten Krieg“ gesehen werden. Der hl. Augustinus von Hippo (Nordafrika) ist Kirchenlehrer des frühen Christentums und Gründer des Augustinerordens, des Ordens, dem Papst Leo lange Zeit vorgestanden hat - übrigens sind die Augustiner auch die geistige Heimat von Martin Luther.
Augustins Kriterien für einen gerechten Krieg des vom Christentum geprägten Römischen Reiches waren:
- Er muss dem Frieden dienen und diesen wiederherstellen (iustus finis).
- Er darf sich nur gegen begangenes, dem Feind vorwerfbares Unrecht, etwa eine gravierende Verletzung oder Bedrohung der Rechtsordnung, richten, das wegen des feindlichen Verhaltens fortbesteht (causa iusta).
- Eine legitime Autorität, also Gott oder ein Fürst (princeps), muss den Krieg anordnen (legitima auctoritas). Dabei muss der Fürst die innerstaatliche Ordnung wahren, d. h. die gegebenen Strukturen des Befehlens und Gehorchens.
- Sein Kriegsbefehl darf nicht gegen Gottes Gebot verstoßen: Der Soldat muss ihn als Dienst am Frieden einsehen und ausführen können.
Die Verteidigung gegen Angriffe ist also durchaus zulässig - das sieht die UN-Charta ebenso. Auch muss die Kriegsführung so erfolgen, dass sie dem Grundsatz der Verhältnismäßigkeit entspricht und Unbeteiligte so wenig wie möglich in Mitleidenschaft zieht - diese Grundsätze bestimmen auch das humanitäre Völkerrecht.
Etliche dieser Gedanken lassen sich unschwer auch in den Genfer Rotkreuzabkommen und dem I. und II. Zusatzprotokoll wiederfinden.
Leo XIV. vertritt damit nach meiner Einschätzung zum einen sehr deutlich die augustinische Lehre (was wohl nicht überraschend ist) und andererseits damit aber auch die Grundsätze des heutigen humanitären Völkerrechts. Wir von der internationalen Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmondbewegung können uns mit seinen Appellen durchaus identifizieren.
Es ist ihm zu wünschen, dass es gelingt, diesen Grundsätzen nicht zuletzt auch durch seine ständigen Mahnungen und Erinnerungen Geltung zu verschaffen. Ich finde, die Menschheit ist ihm für seine Worte sehr zu Dank verpflichtet!

As an evangelical, I do not uphold the papacy of the Catholic Church, but I recognize that Catholics are part of the body of Christ. Pope Leo XIV is no different, and certainly no less relevant when he warned of "a handful of tyrants" who "manipulate religion and the very name of God for their own military [...] and political gain". I don't think I have ever read anything that so pointedly and so justifiably condemned the actions of President Trump and his administration.
