It’s a wonderful thing to watch a bird fly but to know that bird we also need to know how flight is achieved. Field and laboratory biological science are complementary - this cartoon sends a skewed message.

A little annoyed ...

A short mid-week thought

My newsletter is enjoying an encouragingly growing circulation. Nothing earth shattering, but a slow accretion. It began as a way to introduce readers to the too often overlooked wildlife in our towns and villages and gardens, plus some useful information about wildlife gardening based on our own, small scale efforts in suburbia. As Mr. Gradgrind famously said, β€œWhat we need is facts, boy. Facts.” But just facts alone can be a bit dry and dusty, so from now on, I will endeavour to occasionally add some colour as I wander down a few related rabbit holes.

Though a goldmine for the curious botanist, Harewood Plains is also an area under threat β€” from damage caused by off-road dirt bikes, ATVs and tree poaching β€” in part because so little is still known about it.

One of B.C.’s rarest ecosystems is slated to become a subdivision. This community group is uniting to protect it.

I like this name πŸ˜‹
I spent almost all day outdoor - a lot of yard work, a youth soccer game, fly fishing - especially fishing is like a field study πŸ˜‰
So, finishing the day with this beer sounds appropriate 😊

If I were to again take notes and write down my field studies, like I did in university, I would definitely use #obsidian . I'm using it now to write down my personal stuff, but I don't even use half of it's possibilities. Linking files and blocks in other notes, canvas, etc look incredible! Definitely a tool that's helpful for #socialsciences #anthropology #fieldstudies
By way of #Introduction, I am an #Academic #Ornithologist, who uses #Genetic and #Genomic tools coupled with #FieldStudies to understand wild organisms. I work with both #Undergraduate and #Masters students to investigate varied questions about #Loons, #Chickadees, #WhireThroatedSparrows, #Giraffes, #Whales, and #Wildebeest. Hopeful to participate in a non-toxic virtual community of challenging but considerate folks. Cheers!
