But now, also, apparently, if you haven’t used the site recently— like, say, since your last job search years ago— LinkedIn will flag your account, say “suspicious activity”, and lock you out until you prove your identity by UPOADING A GOVERNMENT ID.

In pharmacy school, one of the major things they taught us was how to detect bad study design in medicine.

However, almost all medical studies are built with an alpha of 0.05. This means that there is a 5% chance of Type I Error, and that the study will definitively make the wrong conclusion.

Therefore, if you run the same study enough times, it'll eventually say whatever you want it to say.

If you ask large language model to provide a plan to implement #tariffs to balance trade deficit it does point out that:

• The other country may impose counter-tariffs, reducing exports.
• A high tariff could push importers to find alternative suppliers.
• Consider negotiating trade agreements to improve exports instead of relying solely on tariffs.

Conclusion: LLM is way smarter than current US administration.

I had a whole pithy mini-essay planned on LLMs, the "AI" scam that is attempting to build the ultimate dystopia, the companies pushing it, the workers and citizens who are its victims, and what it means for society as a whole.

Presentation was to be a "future history"-type approach, which I've always had a soft spot for in sci-fi.

And ... I just can't. Trump today decided that not only was driving the world's largest economy off a cliff the prudent thing to do, merely crashing it wasn't enough, so he decided to fill the backseat with lit sticks of TNT, and stick a lit rag in the fuel filler.

The streets tomorrow will be (only metaphorically, with luck) running with blood. People everywhere are going to be hurt, some devastatingly so.

I wonder if this is the kind of thing that Charles Stross means when he talks about the world stopping him from writing or finishing something he'd been planning on. It feels awful.

Replacing the Blue Screen of Death with a new Black Screen of Death, which now no longer contains *any* information about the problem that caused the system to crash and need to restart.

For the average user, it's now impossible to have even a hint as to what the problem is. Great job, everybody!

For power users, geez, I hope something made it into the event logs and onto disk before the system died. No? Oh well, you didn't really need to know, just reset and wonder how long you've got until it happens again.

EDIT / UPDATE: I've now seen a second article about this change. The first didn't include an image, and described the removal of all information related to the specific error. This second one shows a copy, and it still appears to include the filename containing the code that crashed the kernel and whatever Windows calls an errno value. It appears the first article is mistaken, and they've just removed the QR code that has been present for a few years?
