Women’s Protect our forests T-shirt

This is a women’s organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range.

Trees form a large part of the planet’s life support and regulatory systems that we and all other creatures depend on. We must stop cutting them down. It’s not just a question of planting new trees to replace old growth forests as they are more than just trees being complex evolved ecosystems. If you read the science press you will find that daily there are reports of further damage to these ultimately crucial parts of the Earth’s ecosystems and physical processes.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

Freedom of the seas T-shirt

This is the second Scientist and Philosopher T-shirt in the Freedom of the seas – Protect our oceans series (design V2B). It is printed on an organic cotton T-shirt so hopefully lighter environmental loading than many other materials.

The seas and oceans of the world are suffering in so many ways. There’s plastic pollution and acidification. They have absorbed the majority of the heat caused by burning fossil fuels and are filled with various forms of our industrial waste. Our ships make the world beneath the waves incredibly noisy. They also kill creatures such as whales directly. All the waters are over fished subsidised with fossil fuels and some of the catch fed to herbivore farm animals. We humans have and are continuing to completely mess up this part of our small planet.

Check out how these clothes are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

The 23-Atomic-Bomb Valley: Why #Utah’s #AIDataCenter Is A #ClimateDisaster In The Making

by Rex Freiberger

"Your state might be next. Utah counties just approved a data center so massive it would consume more power than the entire state currently uses, dump the heat equivalent of 23 atomic bombs daily into high desert, and potentially increase local #carbon emissions by 55%. Welcome to the #StratosProject#KevinOLeary’s 40,000-acre bet that #AI supremacy trumps everything else."

[...]

"Utah State University physicist Robert Davies calculated #Stratos would dump 16 gigawatts of #ThermalLoad into the surrounding valley—energy equivalent to 23 Hiroshima-scale atomic bombs worth of #heat every single day. You’re trying to cool massive server farms by blowing hot desert air over hot radiators, Davies notes, which doesn’t work well in high-altitude, arid conditions.

"His projections show daytime temperatures rising 2-5°F and nighttime temperatures jumping 8-12°F across the region. #Desert #ecosystems depend on #NighttimeCooling to generate life-sustaining #condensation. Lose that temperature drop, and you’ve fundamentally altered how plants and animals survive in an already stressed #GreatSaltLakeWatershed."

Extreme weather events are accelerating tidal wetland loss, satellite data show

Tidal #wetlands are critical, yet vulnerable #ecosystems. Tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and tidal flats support #biodiversity, protect against #flooding and storm surges, sequester #carbon, and improve #water quality. Due to human development and #ClimateChange, tidal wetland areas have been shrinking globally. A new study using 40 years of satellite data shows that this loss has been accelerating in the U.S. and that this acceleration is being increasingly driven by #ExtremeWeather events.

Clean energy's nickel rush is heading straight for some of Earth's richest ecosystems

Meeting future nickel demand for stainless steel and clean energy technologies will require tough decisions with potential environmental trade-offs, a new study has found. Dr. Jayden Hyman from The University of Queensland's School of the Environment led an international analysis of known nickel deposits, current mining and demand forecasts.
