Heating up a Damascus hunter for heat treat. During this process, the steel is brought up to critical temperature, then plunged into warmed oil. This rapidly cools the steel, locking the crystalline structure into place. This structure is very hard, but brittle, so it will then be heated just enough to allow that structure to relax and loosen slightly.
