What the Internet Was Like in 1997

In 1997, the first browser war began amid new internet trends like 'push' and DHTML. Meanwhile, instant messaging apps like ICQ and AIM became popular and GeoCities achieved 1 million users.

Do you know #DHTML #UX #JS wizards? If so, please boost!

I’m looking for practitioners to quote on a project coming up in 2024.

It will use DHTML and JS to render a complex site navigation as a hyperbolic network visualisation. And it must look slick af.

It will be exploring the multiple drivers of quality of life for people with HIV. We have a reasonable budget.

If you’re intrigued, please feel free to DM or e-mail daniel [at] napwha.org.au for a pre-quote briefing document.

I saw discussion elsewhere about #paywall #loginwall #spywall et al, and it sparked two #thoughts.

1. Since changing #browser settings to #javascript off default & whitelist sites I actually use I have been having such a better #ux. many news paywalls are stupidly just #js enacted, so disabled.

2. Is there a #mastodon / #fediverse site that renders plain #html instead of this annoying #dhtml cruft? I would love to be able to just… read or print threads or something without all [gestures] this.

Oldweb: DHTML Lemmings
DHTML means "Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language." The term is little-used now; it later got renamed AJAX, and now is pretty much just how websites are made if they have any interactive aspects. It was originally presented as an alternative to Flash applets, which were threatening to crowd out actual web pages at that time.

Fond memories of `if (document.all)` and feature-detecting Netscape’s `document.layers`. The #DHTML era was a fun mess. ⤵️

New @[email protected] post: In 1997, Microsoft and Netscape both released versions of Dynamic HTML (DHTML). Perhaps surprisingly, Microsoft's version was far superior. In fact, it directly inspired the W3C's nascent DOM standard (released the following year). https://webdevelopmenthistory.com/1997-the-year-of-dhtml/

1997: The Year of DHTML

DHTML, or Dynamic HTML, was essentially a combination of HTML, JavaScript, the newly released CSS standard, and an emerging web programming model called the DOM (Document Object Model). That said, …
