“Niven recalls “some guys coming into the office in 1994 trying to talk to us about how the #internet was going to change our #business but we couldn’t comprehend it, thought this guy was out of his mind, and we kicked them out”. It turns out those people were looking to generate money for a recent #internetstartup.

“We found out later, over redundancy drinks, that it was #yahoo says Niven. “Had we put 50 grand into Yahoo in 1994 rather than making the second Menswear album, well, we wouldn’t be having this conversation. I’d be swimming with dolphins on my own private island. Mistakes were made in terms of seeing what was coming down the pipeline.”

Do you remember 1994? Yeah, I do. I was doing Post-Grad at Uni, writing software, playing DOOM, installing SoundBlasters and browsing the Web on Windows 3.11 then on Unix using Lynx. By the end of the year at a Startup building tools for the Internet. Windows ‘95 didn’t exist.

I don’t think AI is the www of ‘94.

Me pide S que la ayude a desbloquear su correo. Resulta que los correos de Ya1hoo verifican la identidad usando un mensaje de móvil y además necesariamente una segunda dirección de correo. En el caso de S, esta segunda dirección de correo es un Gmail que lleva años atascado desde que Google unificó los límites de Google fotos, Drive y Gmail en 10 GB donde antes había tres cuentas de 10 GB cada una.

Como la cosa es urgente, S está dispuesta a pagar los 2 euros de la mensualidad de Google One, pero tras dos pagos no parece que Google haya activado la suscripción. Media hora más tarde se nos activará, pero, mientras tanto, empieza una carrera frenética por descargar fotos, borrar fotos. Esto sumado a que el límite de descarga son 100 archivos por vez. (Si no tuviéramos prisa, lo más útil sería pedir una descarga completa de datos, pero eso tarda 48 horas).

En fin, que diez minutos antes de que yo tenga que ir a trabajar y tras 45 minutos de angustia conseguimos dejar operativa la cuenta de Google y desbloquear la cuenta de Yahoo.

(Yo estaba pensando cambiar a yahoo mis correos de suscripciones, pero este caso me ha convencido para no hacerlo).
