I hate fireworks, especially the ones sold and used by the general public. Spending most of your NYs under a bed with a terrified pet changes your perspective somewhat. Glad the Netherlands has finally banned them and hope the rest of the EU follows. People are so unconsciously selfish, my few minutes of pleasure are more important than terrifying the animals that I live amongst.

Amsterdam's Vondelkerk church “cannot be saved” after New Year’s fire

The historic Vondelkerk in Amsterdam “cannot be saved,” authorities said early Thursday as firefighters continued to battle a massive blaze that erupted shortly after midnight during New Year’s celebrations. The fire has fully engulfed the 154-year-old church, causing parts of the tower and roof to collapse, forcing evacuations, and cutting electricity to roughly 90 nearby homes.

so last night, the unsanctioned #fireworks started at 7:30pm went on until 2:30 am and was very frequent, bright and loud. whoever did it must have spent tens of thousands of dollars on it, it was waaay longer and more intense than any community fireworks show i have ever been to in 45 years! that much money??? in THIS economy?! dear gods what good that could have accomplished!how many families could they have fed? #nye

In my neighborhood, there are usually a lot of (illegal) fireworks on holidays, like every day/night June 1 - July 30 for US "independence" day celebrations, all May for Cinco de Mayo, etc.

On Christmas 2025, almost nada. I think one car backfired. On New Years Eve as 2026 rolled in, almost nada. Oh, there was one tiny barrage in the distance, pffft.

I don't think people are celebrating much, or at least not with loud sounds. My dog is happier this way.

It's 2026! We did it!

We survived the dumpster fire that was 2025!

Last night here in #Seattle we had fireworks at our tall friend the Space Needle. There was thick fog, a drone show was cancelled due to it and the broadcast of the show very much so fit 2025... it was a disaster.

You couldn't see much. It felt so fitting to end the year like this.
