I’m increasingly cautious when updating apps - checking to see in the app reviews if the creator decided to do something sleazy like suddenly add a #paywall or #loginwall, basically downgrade what they made.
This degradation of trust is going to cause people to stop updating their software (or even hardware firmware) because, despite that critical security update, they are afraid some sleazy AI shit or forced login or paywall or other shit will be addded.
Dreame robot vacuum
1. needs a proprietary app with 7 trackers and all the permissions https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/com.dreame.movahome/latest/
2. app needs phone number or e-mail address
3. robot needs wifi, but can't use tethering on the phone. it needs the password of the wifi that the phone is connected with.
what is this shit and why did no review mention any of this? 😤

Related frontline editorial from April: https://frontline.thehindu.com/the-nation/adivasi-rights-maoist-conflict-tribal-land-grab-operation-kagar-state-violence-naxals/article69412406.ece
Every day there are news reports of 17, 22, 31 “Maoists” killed. Many of those killed are simply tribal villagers caught in the crosshairs of the deadly, remote-controlled sophistry of modern weaponry. How do these weapons decide who is a Maoist? How do you throw a bomb from a helicopter and know it will land only on a Maoist? What does a Maoist look like? Nobody knows. If supporting the Adivasi cause or reading Karl Marx in your city apartment can get you labelled an urban naxal, then every forest-dweller clinging to her land can be a Maoist. The labels work like infrared emissions, attracting arrests and bullets with unerring regularity.
Amit Shah’s deadline-driven, military-centric approach towards making India ‘naxal free’ by March 31, 2026, is of a piece with this government’s general direction, one driven by performative machismo and performed brutality.
@janboehm gibt's auch was ohne #Loginwall?
If one wants to #loginwall and #paywall it I'd say #Patreon?
Otherwise I'd go with #MkDocs-Material.

@[email protected] +1 I may just use #MkDocs-#Material if I ever setup a #blog. #MkDocsMaterial #CMS #Markdown

@wyatt8740 I too used to apply #HATEOAS: anything accessible through URLs in HTML documents was fair game. That was until I encountered a whole captchalogue of methods that websites use to deter scraping.
1. #RateLimit per IPv4 address and /24 and publish no AAAA record for IPv6, with 24-hour fail2ban penalties for exceeding a limit
2. #CAPTCHA
3. #LoginWall (what Twitter tried and still uses in a scaled-back form)
@tdr @ben it's called the robots.txt clause for a reason.
Also you may want to point @senficon at it, tho "#learning" is not part of that rejection just like #caching cuz otherwise #WebBrowsers would be illegal!
And even then there's a simple solution:
