Last week and this week I've been doing teaching observations of the instructors in the Studies in Religion program that I direct. I have to say, the instructors are outstanding. All contingent faculty and doing more than they are getting paid for, all for the benefit of our students. CUNY needs to stop exploiting adjunct faculty.

(The problem with being #ContingentFaculty is that you are technically not required to do many of the things that #TenuredFaculty do. But if you have any hopes of securing a more permanent position, you have to continue building your CV with stuff that is, well, the stuff required of tenured folks.)

It's easy to get bored with courses you teach a lot. The same material, same assignments, and same examples make it hard to stay motivated.

On our blog, Tala Khanmalek shares how you can refresh your "bread and butter" courses to avoid burnout.

ASU, UA workers petition schools for thriving wages, better job security

A union of workers at Arizona State University and University of Arizona is petitioning the schools to pay all campus workers at least $25 an hour by 2025. But for many contingent faculty members, the fight is about more than bigger paychecks.Contingent faculty members are hired to teach at universities on a short-term contract. Those teaching full time can receive benefits, but they are not eligible for tenure. Nataly Reed is a senior lecturer at UA.

So did I just conclude a fellowship application by saying "listen, I know I don't have as many publications as I should at this point in my career, but if you pay me to do nothing but write and I don't have to teach first and write second, I'll get more published"?

Why yes, yes I did.

The fun thing about being contingent faculty (career-track, lecturers, professors of teaching, whatever we're calling ourselves these days) is that we find out last minute what classes we're teaching.

Tenured profs around this time of year are like ah, yes, finalizing my reading list for my spring seminar, and I'm like I don't know what I'm teaching, where I'm teaching, or when I'm teaching!

I actually found out this week, which isn't too late for us, but it's not the course I thought I'd be teaching and had started to plan. 🤷‍♀️

It is a fun course I enjoy teaching, so I'll figure it out!

New School contingent faculty are on strike and The Illuminator project joined them on the picket line. What, indeed, would James Baldwin do?

…I don’t think my current #IntroToReligion #students should foot the bill, either. They benefit, but indirectly and over time. Arguably my upper-level students? But that seems a disproportionate burden. My #work aims to help the #Church and the world. And #helping the world is part of my employer’s reason for existing, right? Education? #ReligiousLiteracy and all that? So how OUGHT the funding work, for scholars like me? Current system seems wrong & is demonstrably unjust (cf #ContingentFaculty
