In 1920, Charles Garland,
the wealthy heir to a banking fortune, made newspaper headlines for doing the unthinkable:
he declined to accept an inheritance of more than a million dollars from his late father’s estate.
Garland was disillusioned by the era’s gross #inequality
— the top 10 percent of American income earners took in half the country’s annual national income.
Garland saw his refusal to add to that problem as a way of standing up to systemic economic inequality.
But #Upton #Sinclair,
author of “The Jungle,” the 1906 novel that exposed the brutal working conditions in the Chicago stock yards,
read about Garland’s decision and thought he had a better idea.
In a letter to Garland, Sinclair urged him not to refuse the money, but to instead give it away.
He put him in touch with #Roger #Baldwin, a Harvard-educated labor advocate who had just founded the
American Civil Liberties Union.
Garland and Baldwin met and came up with a plan.
Garland would bequest nearly a million dollars
(the rough equivalent of $18 million today)
to endow a philanthropic foundation called the "American Fund for Public Service".
Baldwin would run the foundation with a board of directors comprised of people who were actively involved in efforts to create a more just society

The real SP 2150 was an MU equipped Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton (BLH) S-12. Reportedly: it was built in 1953 as SP 1543 Class DS-118, serial number 75918. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 2150 SP Class B412-4. The disposition of this locomotive is reported as, Retired 1974 sold to Chrome Crankshaft. Resold to Kerr-McGee 100, renumbered to 844. Donated 1990 to Orange Empire Railway Museum.

On Saturday, January 3, 2026, my Bowser HO model of Western Pacific (WP) 583 was leading a local past the "Salmonella" fishery at the California Central Model Railroad Club (CCMRC) in the historic Agnew depot in Santa Clara, CA.
The real WP 583 was a Baldwin VO-1000, WP Class S-60. Reportedly, it was built in 1945, serial 71542. It was sold in 1973, becoming Auto-Train 624.

"Frank's Office" was written in chalk over the door of Southern Pacific (SP) 2150. The Baldwin S12 was captured on Friday, December 28, 1973, in Taylor Yard, Los Angeles, CA.

SP 2150 was an MU equipped Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton (BLH) S-12. Reportedly: it was built in 1953 as SP 1543 Class DS-118, serial number 75918. In 1965 it was renumbered to SP 2150 SP Class B412-4.
