In the spring I'm teaching a categorical data analysis with Python course. If you have favorite readings or knowledge sites on this topic, please suggest! I'm trying to avoid using a textbook. I have a lot of things that work, I think, for beginning grad students, but am always looking for more. #Python #DataAnalytics #PublicHigherEd #Sociology #SocialPsych
I've been working for the last couple of years on a new degree program at the college where I work, BA in Data Analytics. It required becoming familiar with the state Department of Education bureaucracy. But it finally paid off as the state just approved the new degree so we can begin enrolling students. I'll be serving as the program director. #PublicHigherEd #Sociology #DataAnalytics #Python

The chancellor of the City University of New York admitted, in testimony before the House committee on Education & Workforce, that he fired four of my colleagues for their extramural political speech. This is unacceptable. #USPol #PublicHigherEd #EndNewMcCarthyism #RestoreTheFiredFour #CUNY #PSC
I have the world's best research assistant working with me on my research now, thanks to a couple of small grants. She is a computer science major and sociology minor, and she is the smartest undergraduate student I have ever taught. Absolutely amazing!

Woo hoo! I just recruited a student to major in Studies in Religion! Our program is designed as a double major, so students can take religious studies courses along with their other major, and we often get students in the pre-professional programs as majors and minors. #StudiesInReligion #SociologyOfReligion #PublicHigherEd
My term as my college's head of faculty government comes to an end tomorrow. Tonight, I've organized one last big event, a meeting on Title VI and academic freedom. This has been in the works for a while, but it seems more urgent after the recent election outcome and the general decline in our public discourse. #PublicHigherEd #TitleVI #AcademicFreedom #FacultyGovernance

I'm going to focus on generating pressure on my college's administration to publicly support the most vulnerable members of our community in the new political context. Compliance and collaboration will be the habitual response of US educational institutions, trained by decades of austerity, and they will not do the right things unless pushed hard.

Last week and this week I've been doing teaching observations of the instructors in the Studies in Religion program that I direct. I have to say, the instructors are outstanding. All contingent faculty and doing more than they are getting paid for, all for the benefit of our students. CUNY needs to stop exploiting adjunct faculty.

The internet connectivity on my campus is a joke. I had to switch to using my phone as a hotspot for a Zoom meeting with an independent study student. Decades of austerity ideology in New York State (managed by Republicans and Democrats alike) has decimated public higher education here. #PublicHigherEd #Sociology
