“Construction is the art of making a meaningful whole out of many parts. Buildings are witnesses to the human ability to construct concrete things.” — Peter Zumthor

Not for everyone (especially sleepwalkers) but I love the concept of different levels, the plants and a library accessible on several floors 🤩

Two weeks in #belgium🇧🇪 were over too fast three summers ago and so was my photographic #journey into some facts and parts of #worldwar1. I want to polish this account with a focus on the place where #inflandersfields has been created back in 1915. Stay tuned for my new travel- and photography-infos which will feature many aspects of history and especially this cruel war which ended on November 11th, 1918 and took so many brave lifes.

The ancient Romans were masters of building and engineering. Even today one of their structures, the Pantheon, is still intact nearly 2,000 years after it was built, a long time for concrete to last. Researchers from MIT may now know why. @ScienceAlert has the story:

We Finally Know Why Ancient Roman Concrete Lasts Thousands of Years

The ancient Romans were masters of building and engineering, perhaps most famously represented by the aqueducts.

Needed a few lengths of concrete beam for another firewood store, but nothing in the right length in my pile.

So I had to cut one of the longer ones. This took some figuring. Initially I thought the answer was the big jangle grinder with masonry disc, but that is most definitely not the answer.

The right answer was chiseling through the concrete until the rebar is accessible. Then cutting that.

But! Cutting rebar under load is dangerous. The solution I came up with is to cut it 90% through and then stop and smash it with a hammer or pickaxe until it goes ping.

Much safer than it pinching the cutting wheel and flinging it at your face or ripping the grinder out of your hands.

@yngmar I've got two bollards someone added to the pavement out front of our house back 30-odd years ago, rebar surrounded with concrete. I was going to try with an angle grinder, so thanks for this. Happily a car hit one and it dislodged it enough that I manged to lever it out, but the other two are solid.
@yngmar
Thank you for the TIL!

@yngmar

Smart.

Next one, can we try shaped charges?

@yngmar I'm not exactly sure how I would have approached this particular issue.

Your technique of cutting the rebar most of the way through and then hitting it with a hammer to separate it sounds like a legit diy protip! 👍

@yngmar

Now that looks like a miserable job.

And I thought breaking down big piles of shrubbery was bad.

@wedge Yup, the concrete logs are more challenging than the wooden ones 😁

They cope better with laying on the ground though!

@yngmar Why would the cutting of rebars under load be dangerous?
Moreover, even if your rebars were originally prestressed, once you remove the concrete around them the force disappears.
You can verify this: if there was any load, once you cut 90% the remaining 10% would be yielding like crazy.

@macst They aren't under load from being prestressed, then they'd just ping apart and no problem. They're loaded because it's impossible to rest the beam level, so they will bend, open on the top and pinch on the bottom usually, just like a hanging log pinching your chainsaw.

That pinching will clamp your cutting wheel and then you can find out how good your safety goggles really are.

In addition, the beam moves once cut, jerking your angle grinder violently.

@yngmar Safety first! Or at least second!
@davepolaschek No expendable workers here and no time for injuries!
