“McCrae was a McGill professor and physician. He and his colleagues from Montreal's No. 3 Canadian General Hospital, organized by the university, cared for thousands of soldiers during the First World War.

“In Flanders Fields is still recited each year at Remembrance Day ceremonies across Canada — more than a century after it was written.

“McCrae, serving as a medical officer in the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a lieutenant-colonel, wrote the poem in the spring of 1915 as the war entered its 11th month. Born in Guelph, Ont., he crafted the piece in Belgium following the death of a friend and fellow soldier during the Second Battle of Ypres.”

I sent a donation and dedicated this #DigitalPoppy to my Great Uncle, Sgt. Daniel Jodoin, who was #killedinaction in France in #WW2. He was only 25.

S2 E19 We Will Remember Them

On November 11th, Canada observes Remembrance Day.

Today, we will remember the members of our armed forces who have died in the line of duty. Across Canada, there will be a moment of silence at the 11th hour.  In the year 1918, WWI hostilities formally ended “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.”

I am wearing a red poppy, which is the Canadian symbol of Remembrance Day based on the poem “In Flanders Fields.”

On May 3, 1915, Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was moved to write the poem after he presided over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier, Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle Ypres.

In Flanders Fields by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae

In Flanders fields the poppies blowBetween the crosses, row on row,That mark our place: and in the skyThe larks still bravely singing flyScarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead: Short days ago,We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,Loved and were loved: and now we lieIn Flanders fields!Take up our quarrel with the foeTo you, from failing hands, we throwThe torch: be yours to hold it highIf ye break faith with us who die,We shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fieldsComposed at the battlefront on May 3, 1915during the second battle of Ypres, BelgiumLieutenant Colonel John McCrae

May we all continue to seek peaceful solutions…together.

Two weeks in #belgium🇧🇪 were over too some summers ago and so was my photographic #journey into some facts and parts of #worldwar1. Not only was #inflandersfields created at this place, indeed the youngest fallen hero is buried here: #vjstrudwick is told to have fallen at the age of 15 - unbelievable and sad! 😢 Lest we forget all those who gave their utter sacrifice for freedom - true heroes they were!

Rewinding my lifeline back to July 2021, I (once again) visited Belgium and especially the region of Flanders where my interest in Flanders Fields was born years ago.

Hill 60 was a low rise south-east of Ypres made from the soil removed in digging a cutting for the Ypres to Comines railway.

It is told to had excellent views over both Ypres and Zillebeke, and was captured by the German army during the first Battle of Ypres in November 1914. On 17 April 1915, in one of the first tunnelling operations by the British Army, six mines exploded under Hill 60, which was then quickly captured with minimal casualties.
