This #Summer #Solstice I am grateful I took the time to wrap up work early, grab a lychee soda and soju, and reach my neighbourhood beach at just the right tide.
I am now digging my toes in the sand, searching for interesting shapes in the shells as I let go of weeks of stress.
For just a moment, I can forget all the problems and projects waiting for me.
For a few hours, I have a book about space octopi and interstellar spiders who have outgrown their Humans. It gives me hope. #ChildrenofRuin

Recently finished _Children of Ruin_, the second book in Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of Time series. They use the concept of #uplifting of non-human animals to

1. show how hard it would be to communicate with aliens (as finding common ground for communication with earth born intelligences is still very difficult)

2. take the time to find that common understanding rather than rashly resorting to violence

Goodreads

Children of Memory was a disappointing book, but had a number of good short stories in it. Had this been a collection of short stories, I think I would have been happier with the final result. The gimmick/writing device was frustrating and came across as magical realism more than science fiction.

Like the movie Paprika, just go ahead and read the plot explainer ahead of time.

#ChildrenOfTime and #ChildrenOfRuin were well worth the high page count.

Just finished #ChildrenOfRuin by #AdrianTchaikovsky! Very good book with a healthy combination of space opera & speculative evolution. A great follow up to #ChildrenOfTime. I'm excited to read the next one when I can get my hands on it!

@demiller @MariNemo and @aptshadow wrote the excellent #ChildrenofRuin for another example of cephalopod intelligence

Rereading #ChildrenOfRuin by @aptshadow and completely forgot about some great horror moments about halfway through the book. (spoilers, obviously)

During lockdown I rediscovered my love of reading - fortunately stumbling across #JohnScalzi #OldMansWar, which I loved and reminded a bit me of the #JoeHaldeman #ForeverWar series. Which led me to the #Bobiverse books by #DennisETaylor which I LOVED. I'm looking for suggestions. Currently on #TermsOfEnlistment by #MarkoKloos & enjoying so far. I like #AndyWeir, #PoulAnderson and I'll always read anything in the #Dune universe. Really liked #ChildrenOfTime, #ChildrenOfRuin & #DogsOfWar / #BearHead by #AdrianTchaikovsky. Enjoyed #TheThreeBodyProblem, but The Dark Forest has left me in the weeds a bit (will return for another go at some point). Genuinely looking for suggestions!
